Easier said than done. I have Work Rage and a lot of stress. And now I’m physically dependent to some degree on top of it. I probably take a couple days off every few weeks. During the work week I drink to decompress from stress and then weekend rolls around and I want to have a good time. Most of my friends are heavy drinkers too.

So somebody who lived to puberty in the middle ages had a lifespan roughly equal to ours. Yet, they were drinking constantly because the water wasn't safety. What's more, in the USA there's only like 10K liver transplants a year but only 2K people a year die waiting for a liver. It's true that alcohol is bad for you, but so is a lot of shit. The risks of alcohol are hugely overstated.

We’re a mostly male office and allow alcohol. Everyone has bottles of scotch sitting around and we do “martini wednesdays” and such. I have somewhere in that range every day unless I’m in court. All the other lawyers do too except our estate planning guy who started waving a gun around and drove his car partially over the side of a mountain at a firm retreat. He promised everyone he’d never drink again.

I think it depends highly on your ethnicity.

If you are Slavic, Irish, English, etc. you can probably drink 3-5 drinks a day and have relatively few consequences. If you are Asian, Native American, etc., not so much.

My father is over 75 and still has 2-3 drinks most days. He still works 4 days a week and is in good health apart from taking a statin for high blood pressure that I think is caused by stress and diet. He is sharp as a tack, walks long distances with no problems, and drives a high performance sports car. The main side effect is he may get drowsy by 9 PM. (But he’s up at 5:45 every morning whether he works or not.) My mom has a low tolerance and has probably 7 drinks per week. She was a SAHM and took decent care of herself, but is in worse health due to a heart condition, random auto-immune stuff, etc.

Social consequences are one thing. Drinking so much you get a DUI or can’t get up and have a purpose requires more than 4 drinks per day, IMO. But in my personal observation, I have not seen adverse health consequences for otherwise healthy people until you are drinking 6 or more per day with frequent 8+ binges. Your mileage may vary, though.

Also, a lot of the ill long-term health effects of alcohol are confounded by a drinking culture that includes increased smoking rates, drunk driving, and eating fatty/shitty food. It’s hard to back those out. If you are eating vegetables and high-quality protein and having 2 glasses of wine and a scotch a few nights a week, and not waking up with a hangover, and still exercising and walking, you’re probably fine.

Do you know of anyone who averages three to six per day but does not drink eight or more per day on the weekend?

When I drank every day it took willpower to limit myself to six on a weekend day and the default was eight or more.

LOL at all the bro-science rationalizing in here. I am a heavy drinker myself so I'm not going to advocate for teetotaling but it's additional self-harm to not keep your eyes wide open.

Alcohol is not good for your health in even small quantities, particularly with consistent daily drinking. 5-15 will catch up to the large majority of people, even if they could sustain it for years with no serious consequences. If you have family history of CVD and cancer, it's particularly stupid to drink like that. It also fucks up your looks, wrecks fitness and muscle development/maintenance, and negatively affects hormone levels. The slow and steady debilitation of cognitive function is also well known and supported by good research. It inflames your digestive tract and fucks up your gut microbiome, which is inarguably critical for good health.

As some of our alco-apologists pointed out, a few a day is not likely to put most people in serious health jeopardy although some downstream consequences are inevitable. There is no cogent argument that 50+ a week won't eventually fuck you up, placing you in a position where you must choose between not being able to really drink in a satisfying way anymore or just diving into the bottle with no heed for the future.

It's still worth it for many people. But scrambling around trying to find tortured rationalizations for why it's fine to dump booze into your body every day in lieu of constructive ways to endure the tedium of life is one of XO's most consistently retarded perspectives.

CR. I’m just saying there’s a big difference between 20 per week and 50. 30 is probably the dividing line of alcoholism—but everyone has their own limits and many people go through phases of more or less drinking.

Something tells me you have 20-30 drinks a week. Most people shockingly always think their level of drinking is somehow the healthy or at least acceptable level. But as you point out a lot of heavy drinkers are not heavy drinkers for decades but go through heavy and lighter months throughout the year, which complicates things. It’s not good for you and definitely decreases life expectancy, but being sober most of the time sucks and it’s a trade off consciously made by many. We’re in a historical period of lighter drinking especially in the US so those of that drink heavily are like the new smokers, with all these nanny state types running around talking about the dangers of drinking like they just discovered something new that everyone didn’t already know and consciously accept
