iraq, katrina, and the online poker ban. the poker ban had a weird and forgotten role in that whole election. basically, montana's GOP senator conrad burns was one of its more prominent supporters, as a favor to his congressional buddy jim leach of iowa (the same leach from the gramm leach bliley act).

jon tester hit him on that issue, since montana was still a bit libertarian-leaning back then, and narrowly won the election. probably on the strength of that one specific narrow issue.
