It struck me, these wild beasts live in a world that is truly nasty and rough. I mean the thing was soaking wet and just sitting there. Pathetic. Probably cold, maybe scared, and the world raged on around it. In contrast, I got to wait out the rain inside my dry house. Perhaps it’s worth all the hard work to not have to live like a squirrel.

They're used to it. If he was really bothered by it, there's tons of places on your porch, etc where he could chill out of the rain. I have squirreldoods in my backyard pretty regularly. They drink out of the pool and like to hang out on the waterfalls or run around on top of the tennis court fence. Occasionally they hang out on the porch and last year I saw a family of little baby squirreldoods running around on the porch with their parents, which was 180.

There's no rest for squirrels. That tree was his own personal Teewinot, where he sits perched exposed to the elements, to hawks and other predators, kids with BB guns, all so that he can get enough resources. His monthly nut is more than just one nut, he needs many. And he needs to support his baby momma and all the little tiny squirrels that get hungrier and hungrier as they grow up. He does not have the luxury of time to wait out the thunderstorm. Competition is immense and resources are limited and shrinking even further as humans cut down trees. He's wet, he's cold, he's scared...but he goes out there every day to earn his keep on this planet, collecting Nuts until he becomes some other animal's or car's monthly Nut himself.

Yes, it’s profound. This squirrel may not be old enough to remember the trees that were lost in my neighborhood last year. There were many lost though. I’m sure it was a point of consternation among the local squirrel families.

I barely missed hitting a squirrel dood with my car recently. He risks it all every single day just to cross the street.

I find them dead in my yard every now and then. I threw one carcass in the trash, I let another just decay. Some animal ripped it all to pieces.

my dog has caught and killed eleven squirrels that we know of. they are not built to sustain a vigorous bite and violent shaking.

strange dog. he actively stalks. if he sees a squirrel he will circle around through bushes or trees and then burst out unexpectedly in a dead sprint. he catches most of his squirrels when the juveniles are about a month old and wander stupidly far out into the meadow grass.
