Even a great genius like Descartes fell victim to it (although to be fair this was in the 17th century). The framing is psychologically powerful even when the inference is extremely weak. People experience an enormous asymmetry between observing a brain and being the organism undergoing the state. From the outside they see neurons, chemistry, behavior, and models. From the inside they encounter pain, color, presence, and affect directly. They then mistake that difference in access for evidence of two different kinds of thing.
