They were writing that show weekly. I mean the time from writing to actual live performance was ONE WEEK. SNL is the same but the scripts are maybe 10% as complex and they leave all kinds of room for improv. Monty Python didn't do improv really, they actually wrote and memorized all that insane dialogue.
The movies aren't like this at all, which is probably why I can't watch any of them. I mean I cannot watch 5 minutes of any Monty Python production except actual Flying Circus episodes. It's not funny unless it's all being done on the fly with only one week to prepare.
