Topline

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. assessed President Donald Trump’s diet during a podcast, saying he is surprised the president is still alive because of the “poison” he frequently consumes.

Key Facts

During his appearance on The Katie Miller Podcast—hosted by the wife of White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller—Kennedy was asked who has the most “unhinged eating habits,” and Kennedy paused for a moment before replying, “the president.”

“I don’t know how he’s alive,” Kennedy commented of Trump, who the HHS secretary said “eats really bad food, which is McDonald’s and candy and Diet Coke. He drinks the Diet Coke at all times. He has the constitution of a deity.”

When the president is at the White House or Mar-a-Lago, he is eating healthier, according to Kennedy, but Trump eats fast food while traveling “because he trusts it and doesn’t want to get sick when he’s on the road.”

Crucial Quote

“If you travel with him, you get this idea he is pumping himself full of poison all day long and you don't know how he's walking around, much less being the most energetic person any of us have ever met,” Kennedy said on the podcast.

Key Background

After Trump’s annual physical examination last April, his physician noted the president was in “excellent health,” with Trump telling reporters he felt he “was in very good shape.” His tests have been scrutinized, however, as a focus on his weight, history of heart disease and some physical signs of aging led nearly half of Americans to believe Trump has not been fully transparent about his health, according to a May poll by YouGov and The Economist. In a follow-up poll by the organizations in September, 39% of respondents said they don’t trust information released about Trump’s health, and 13% said they believed the information “only a little.”

Trump’s Affinity For Mcdonald’s

The president’s fondness for unhealthy food has been well chronicled, including in the 2017 book by “Let Trump Be Trump,” when the co-authors—two of his former aides—wrote, “On Trump Force One, there were four major food groups: McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, pizza and Diet Coke.” While on the campaign trail in 2024, Trump visited a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania and worked a drive-thru window. And when he welcomed the Clemson Tigers football team to the White House following their national championship win in 2019, he served them Big Macs and fries, along with Wendy’s, Burger King and pizza, telling reporters he thought “that would be their favorite food.” The visit coincided with a government shutdown and Trump said he bought the food himself. Kennedy’s sentiments on Trump’s diet were previously shared by Republican National Committee chair Joe Gruters, who questioned during an October podcast, “How does a guy that is as senior as him get away with eating all this McDonald’s probably on a consistent basis?”

News Peg

Kennedy unveiled a new “upside down” version of the food pyramid last week emphasizing whole foods and protein, including red meat. Highly processed foods are strongly discouraged under the updated guidelines.
