sounds like there was a big wildfire, the locals fled, then the brits tried to flee, but they took the wrong road and died:

Latest on the wildfire in Los Gallardos (Almería) - At least 11 dead and 23 missing in Andalucia's deadliest fires

At least 11 were killed in a wildfire which erupted on Thursday in the Almerian town of Los Gallardos (population 3,110), according to the latest updates from the Andalusian government. Andalusia's president, Juan Manuel Moreno, noted that the fatalities may be at 12, awaiting confirmation of the discovery of another body.

Government officials reported that 23 persons had not been located. The dead, which are believed to be foreign tourists, had attempted to flee the town "on a route other than the official evacuation plan" and were taken unawares by the fire. The government believes that the nationality of the dead are British, based on the position of the steering wheels in vehicles discovered in the fire, though official confirmation remains pending. Initial investigation points to a downed power line as the source of the fire.
