So churches became these grand opulent palaces we think of Catholic churches being today. There were a billion other things that got "romanized" at that point too.
The church also got sucked into power at that point, against its will you could say. The authority of popes began to grow just as the authority of emperors was weakening, so that the church just kind of whoops inherited a lot of political authority from the old Roman empire. We ended up with a situation where people in Germany and France were no longer subjects of Rome, but they were still "subjects" of the Pope. So in a sense the western empire was still alive, and the reformation was the real end of the Roman empire. |
