Global population will probably start shrinking soon

Date: May 13th, 2024 5:13 PM Author: provocative wild scourge upon the earth Fertility is falling fast around the world. Most importantly for overall figures, it is incredibly low in East Asia. Because it is a huge share of the global population, it drags down the average. One of the defining features of fertility stats over the last few years is how unexpectedly fast the drop has happened. Officially, TFR gobally is right around the global replacement rate of 2.2, maybe a little below. But it could easily fall well below that.
The population is still growing because of "demographic momentum" (life expectancy is rising in many areas and there are more births than deaths, at least for the moment). But that could easily change. The UN estimates say that the global population should start shrinking in the second half of this century. I think it will come sooner than that. Maybe in a decade or two. |
