some leftist friends were shrieking about
the sound
the smell
only provided temporary jobs
the power costs being passed on to the community
So I drove by 3 of them myself.
no sound whatsoever.
no smell whatsoever.
first two had few cars in the parking lot and 3rd one had 1 car in the parking lot so that may be a valid but otherwise meaningless point
CoPilot and Grok estimate most customers won't notice more than a couple dollars a month at worse.
It's a fake talking point and probably being pushed by China.

china is going to buttfuck us regardless over the next 10-30 years. data centers aren't going to change the fact that they are the sole country capable of manufacturing literally everything and years ahead of everyone else in robotics and such. it is just impossible for anyone to overcome their advantage in raw concentration of IQ and manufacturing capability, the only alternative being some sort of international coalition (which is a pipe dream).
the current buildout spree has nothing to do with actual demand and is purely in service of a bunch of tech dweebs who have fully bought in to the "first guy to reach sufficient capability wins the singularity" hypo. it's more likely that we're egregiously overbuilding and left with trillions of dollars of "infrastructure" collecting dust as models increase in inference efficiency and chips are released which provide a much better price/performance ratio than nvidia offers today.
people who knee-jerk oppose datacenters are populist retards (in both directions btw, it isn't just libs). taking a gamble is at the end of the day at least preferable to doing absolutely nothing, which is what would happen otherwise. but nobody should be under the illusion that this is anything other than a huge gamble which benefits a very narrow set of interests if it pays off, and the public is correct to smell a rat. this is america, the odds of some "trickle down AI miracle" are basically zero.

Data centers are a red herring. Obviously they're bad for the locals living in whatever locality they're being proposed to be placed in. That's not a difficult or interesting or useful question to ponder
The real question is whether or not one should be opposed to AI (as a regular citizen). The answer is pretty clearly no. But there are at least arguments to be made in the other direction. "Oddly," though, none of the AI proponents are even bothering to make them. They're just forcing AI on the population instead in an overtly hostile manner. Very odd. Very odd indeed
