These things are marketed to old ladies and disabled guys, but recently saw some doods with 100-110+ swing speeds say they got fitted into HL version of regular gamer irons (ai smoke or mizuno jpx).

HL had slightly reduced distance but small trade off for much lower dispersion. Basically they're arcing the ball way higher in the air and landing it almost 90 degrees to the ground so that distances become way more consistent and predictable.

Considering booking a flight to Japan just to get fitted into some new Mizunos

Yeah I think you're right

Should just be sensible and go with callaway. Their hq is 20 miles away and they do free fittings everywhere.

But I keep seeing rumors that JDM clubs have hotter faces than USA counterparts..

It's stupid how strong the loft has gotten on game improvement and distance irons, and HL irons do get back to more reasonable lofts. These 26-29 degree 7 irons just won't land steep enough for your average swing speed bogey golfer, even with the tech they try to build in.

Exactly. My 7-iron is straight as fuck and 160ish but can't see where it goes half the time. Got paired with Cantlay looking bro who launched his 7i way higher, like my wedges. Thought it was weird at the time but he was good as shit, and now I realize he had HL irons.

The problem with HL models like the JPX is their massively chunky soles. I'd personally just go with an iron that isn't quite so loft-jacked.

you should stop the ball via spin, not by bringing it in from a high angle

Higher launch usually translates to more backspin for amateurs. Guys like me should not be trying to manipulate the face on full iron swings

I agree that in windy conditions or on links style courses, or ultra dry heat like west Texas, that a lower flight, even bump and run style, makes sense

This is dependent on swing speed. High swing speed guys compress the ball more and create more spin, so want to launch in a lower window because the spin both creates lift and allows the ball stop quicker regardless of descent angle. Your average swing speed amateur needs to launch higher than a pro because they don't have the speed and spin to get the ball to descend at a good angle or stop quickly otherwise.

eh, i'm a hack and ime hitting the ball high causes more problems than it solves. if i could consistently blade the ball i would probably just do that. i've had some of my best rounds where i was just skulling it all over the place.
