I watched the movie Air and obviously they try to build this story around marketing Michael Jordan into the greatest NBA player and they poopoo Mel “Dinner Bell Mel” Turpin throughout, like they were going after serendipity.

Nothing about the film is credible. Michael Jordan had an unprecedented marketing deal, won championships, was the king of it all, and threw it all away to play minor league baseball. Today he’s still a billionaire, gets to gamble all he wants, is generally reclusive and unremarkable in private life.

Sports are just ludicrous. Who cares. Life goes on. Nobody will even remember who Michael Jordan is in 50 years. He’ll be like Honus Wagner.

Clearly, friend. This is also true at smaller scales though. When is enough enough? Do most people need $10m? What about 5m? 3m? 2m? 1m?

Dementia Mom is mid-70s, rents a small house, doesn’t want to travel any more, has a $1.1m IRA and is afraid to spend a dime. Surely that’s not an ideal outcome.

you literally picked the single example of a living athlete for whom this isn't true, you still know babe ruth, mj is at that level, he is less important as a basketball player than as a cultural figure, mj is America in the 90's

MJ is an example of an overhyped, over marketed caricature, sure. He’s known for being a degenerate gambler and getting his dad killed. He’s known for his disastrous left turn in his career. He’s remembered as the quintessential jock who turned down loser alley to disastrous results, but came back home and found his way again.

I think a lot of people conflate a lust for greatness with simple desire to achieve in a field

Achievement isn't necessarily "great" but it is growth and advancement and that's the game most of us tolerate, play, and occasionally even enjoy in our professional lives until our 60s or 70s come around

Wow. That’s an insight. Maybe that’s what is missing from my life, professional or otherwise, a sense that I am advancing, building, or otherwise working toward some meaningful goal,

i've heard from peers that a change in scenery or locale is often the guide to revealing life meaning obscured at present, especially in cases of burnout, anomie, or spiritual alienation from work or colleagues

in previous times holidays would provide a sort of "refresh" to renew and invigorate the drives but with the invasion and partial collapse of traditional america's calendar and cultural system there's not much solace to be found in 3 day weekends

Maybe. It’s also being a parent to four small kids. They suck up all the oxygen in my life and I can’t breathe or otherwise self-reflect. It’s a very hard time for me right now.

thats what most people are missing. usually after theyve achieved everything important (career, family, etc.)

you have a very obvious, important, and achievable goal staring at you in the mirror every day. one that every bit of effoet will produce visible improvement and qualify of life gains. but you'd rather mope on xo.
