Trump T1 nostalgia was rooted in the strength of the pre-COVID economy. Tariffs have been a disaster and are functionally just random, erratic sales taxes on Americans but worse than that because they also completely fuck up corp planning and supply chains. Peter Navarro should be shot into the sun

If they take the L and do a u-turn on tariff policy things should be back to ripping with good vibes by the time 2028 rolls around

Eswar Prasad, a professor of trade policy and economics at Cornell University, said: “This decision will escalate the uncertainty surrounding the scope and coverage of Trump’s tariffs but will scarcely thwart the administration from deploying tariffs broadly as an economic and geopolitical tool.”

yes but someone will immediately move for an injunction which will be granted and there may not be a stay this time in wake of new SCOTUS ruling

I was fine with the tariffs because I'm not sure what the alternative is to get some manufacturing back. Also lots of other countries have them and don't have political divides over them

Tariffs aren't enough though. The way it works in practice is there are a ton of contract manufacturers in China making basic industrial inputs that literally nobody in America has the tooling to make. Those get imported, assembled, tested, value-added changes made or whatever else in America in jobs that would still be considered "manufacturing". The tariffs completely FUCK those types of businesses but do nothing to bring back the manufacturing of the input goods.

The chinaman government was giving out basically free money to turbocharge mfg capacity of shit like this. They aren't just chinkslaves in a sweatshop doing it by hand, they have huge highly advanced factories with significant automation all funded by commie government chinkbucks

"Tariffs" alone aren't remotely close enough to fix the problem. Unless we're willing to also give out insane loans to fund the buildout it won't work, you're just going to end up fucking the American companies that leverage chink inputs for their own manufacturing and fuck end-customers who are now paying more $$$

so then what's the plan? let the chinese totally dominate manufacturing?

the only countries with tariffs anywhere near as high as Trump implemented are shithole third world countries. Economists almost unanimously agree tariffs are harmful and there's no political divide.
