I understand the purpose of the rule, but why don't most casual or PGA golfers just agree to let closer ball putt first for faster play and not having a ball marker in their path?

Closer to the hole isn’t an official rule. You do it so you don’t stand in someone else’s line and leave spike marks and in general it makes the putting order flow more naturally. Right of continuation is a thing that Rory would have normally done had he not wanted to gloat by having the final putt and also give Cam Young a quiet look at what would have been a very expensive putt for him to miss.
