I knelt down beside my son and looked him in the eye. "Where did you hear that word?"

"In this old book," he said.

I sighed. "It's a pilot who would fly higher than the sky, who might even go to the moon."

"Wow," he breathed. "Does America have astronauts?"

I felt the hot sting of tears brimming in my eyes, and I blinked repeatedly. "No, not anymore."

He looked confused. "Does Russia?"

I nodded.

"And does China?"

I swallowed hard, feeling the lump in my throat, and nodded again.

"So why don't we?"

"Well, a man named Barack Obama didn't think it was important."

He stared at me for a minute. "It's okay, I'll live here with you forever--who needs to go to space?"

Son, we used to risk people's lives to go on scientifically dubious vanity space missions as part of a cold war propaganda campaign. Now we land awesome robot explorers on places like Mars and the moons of Jupiter. Oh, and if you want to take a ride to space we have private companies that will take you up for relatively low cost.

lol no, we used to send warriors and fighter pilots to the last frontier. Then we turned into a politically-correct NSF grant program in low orbit. Then we stopped the pretense, cut it all together, and started putting cameras on wheels around the solar system.

What we should really hope for is that the Russians or Chinese land on the moon sometime this decade, at the site of the Apollo 11 landing. They walk over to American flag, planted by Armstrong in '69, fold it up, and replace it with their own. All broadcast live for the national audience.

We'd be back on the moon within five years and have a manned mission to mars within the decade.

(guy unaware that we retired the archaic space shuttle and are now developing the next generation SLS that 1) is scheduled for its maiden voyage in 2017, 2) will be more advanced than anything the Russians or Chinese will build for 40 years, and 3) will be the vehicle that carries the first humans to Mars)

2015 was supposed to start the manned Constellation missions. 2017 as the projected date for unmanned missions of SLS is garbage.

why are you so angry? the actual means by which we get to the ISS is irrelevant until the SLS is ready. Are you worried the Russians are going to kick us out of the ISS for a few years and claim it as their own personal clubhouse or something? its redundant to have 2 countries both supporting archaic, expensive launch systems while we're busy developing the next generation system. its cheaper and more sensible for us to lease their launch system from them for a few years while we finalize the SLS

On January 14, 2004, U.S. President George W. Bush announced the Orion spacecraft, known then as the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV), as part of the Vision for Space Exploration:

“ Our second goal is to develop and test a new spacecraft, the Crew Exploration Vehicle, by 2008, and to conduct the first manned mission no later than 2014. The Crew Exploration Vehicle will be capable of ferrying astronauts and scientists to the Space Station after the shuttle is retired. But the main purpose of this spacecraft will be to carry astronauts beyond our orbit to other worlds. This will be the first spacecraft of its kind since the Apollo Command Module.

Here is the hidden subtlety of this poast: The Dad was holding back tears because he grew up loving America. Idolizing the brave men (and few women, lol) that gave their lives for this country. But, as a white man, he is brow beaten by the current country he lives in and doesn't love it as much anymore. The son doesn't love this country because he grew up in a country that hates him.

So when he says that he will just stay with Daddy, the son is showing that he loves his dad more than his country. And the dad realizes, in that moment, that his country doesn't matter anymore and that his son and family are all that are important.
