Ritual sacrifice bring one of them, dying in battle was another. The worst thing that could happen to you was to lose a battle but NOT die, and then live on to old age. There was a lot of cross-polinization among prehistoric mexican tribes and a lot of them ended up worshipping variants of the same God, so it's entirely conceivable that they would have shared the Aztecs' beliefs about this.
