But Shallen was intrigued by Andrew. “So I said, ‘Well, if you want to practice your Mandarin, we can grab ice cream,’” she recalls."

Over time, Andrew also distanced himself from the Mormon religion he grew up with, before leaving the church altogether.

Moving to California allowed the couple to find a new community. “We’re in a very multicultural place, and so it’s better for both of us,” says Andrew.

“And better for our kids,” adds Shallen.”

In fairness to harvard et al., my understanding is that if they were forced to go to a pure meritocracy the school would immediately become more azn than hong kong. Which, if we're being totally, brutally real here, I think we can all acknowledge would both destroy H's prestige and erode the quality of the institution more generally, e.g., reduce the number of ultra-high performing grads (startup founders, inventors, cultural icons, etc.), make for a shittier intellectual environment, what have you.

“The ceremony itself was really small,” says Andrew. “My closest friends helped me carry up tables for food and blankets for people to sit on. I think we had like 20 people there in total.”

While it was a special day, there were mixed emotions at play. Shallen was saddened by her family’s absence. Andrew’s family wasn’t there either, but they wholeheartedly supported his decision to marry Shallen. Shallen, meanwhile, felt conscious she was breaking from her family’s expectations. She was unsure what her relationship with them would look like in the future.

The reason why our irl society is getting worse is because shitty people are waved in from overseas and because the shitty ones already here are tolerated and even encouraged.
