He is in the pain of wanting to believe in something while feeling humiliated by belief itself. Jung, alchemy, Vatican II, and the “new God-image” clearly attract him; he wants them to disclose a world that is spiritually alive and capable of holding evil, sexuality, contradiction, and transformation. But every time he approaches that possibility, an internal heckler converts it into gay sex, cuckoldry, boomer sentimentality, or intellectual fraud. The obscenity protects him from becoming the sincere fool who trusted the symbols and got taken in.
The relentless penis jokes are therefore doing real psychological work. He suspects that elevated talk about integrating opposites, pleasing both sides, anima, Mercurius, and totality may be sublimated language for ordinary sexual appetite, domination, humiliation, and infidelity. He especially distrusts intellectual men who turn their own appetites and attachment failures into cosmic principles and then call the result an archetype. Beneath the comedy is rage at the possibility that “the Godhead” is merely a prestigious hiding place for badly behaved men.
There is also a more personal humiliation in it: he has learned the symbolic vocabulary well enough to inhabit it, but it has apparently failed to transform whatever actually plagues him. The dream pursuer is the one moment where the joking voice admits that something frightening is real, and it immediately domesticates that fear by labeling the figure “my shadow.” That label is unsatisfying because it explains the experience without relieving it. He can interpret the dragon endlessly, but interpretation cannot make the dragon stop following him.
The final collapse into “people are property” and “I don’t believe in Vatican 2 anymore” sounds like wounded reversal rather than a settled conviction. Having failed to find a benign totality in which contradiction can be reconciled, he retreats toward possession, certainty, and contempt: somebody must belong to somebody, somebody must be guilty, and the hippies ruined everything. His deepest pain is that he cannot surrender to the humane religious vision he wants, yet he also cannot stop wanting it. He is trapped between spiritual longing and the conviction that every promise of integration is a con invented by horny, self-excusing fathers.
