Its per capita endowment was a fraction of Northwestern's last I checked, which may have been several decades ago. Princeton always seemed like the daddy, and there are a few niche colleges like Grinnell that sit on yuge per capita endowments. Oberlin was also rich per capita IIRC, and Rice was so rich it gave free tuition to Texas residents until recently. Harvard endowment is yuge but IIRC they also borrowed heavily against it like UofC.
