The deal for purchasing the ship, rechristened as INS Vikramaditya, was signed in 2004 by the then NDA government at $974 million which was increased to final price of $2.35 billion in 2010.
The ship was originally commissioned by the erstwhile Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) on December 20, 1987, and was decommissioned in 1996. |

This view is reinforced by India’s bitter experience in acquiring the Vikramaditya from Russia, when the original price rose from US$974 million to $2.35 billion. Together with 45 MiG-29K aircraft and additional modifications, the overall price now sits somewhere between $6 billion and $7 billion.
