The Matrix was incredible and although it has aged somewhat (due to part of the original appeal being the new/amazing CGI) it's still a great movie.
Reloaded has held up even better than the original due to the CGI not really having aged a whole lot. It still looks amazing and something that could have been made in the last 5 years (the only scene that looks cartoony is the end of the fight with all the Smiths). The action sequences are AMAZING. The highway scene is still one of the most amazing scenes in any action or sci-fi movie.
The original is obviously better though just due to the storyline.
The last one is utter shit. It has a couple of decent scenes, but overall just such shit. Only good part I can think of is Trinity dying.

I agree in general, but not regarding the Merovingian. He's an exiled program that is not on the side of the Machines or the Zion people. He was going to be deleted but was like F that, I'm going to provide a safe haven for other (usually older and deadly) programs scheduled to be deleted/exiled in the Matrix. The machines leave him alone since he's essentially a minor distraction and he's a means to an end. They need the keymaker to be a pawn in their grand plan, and the Merovingian makes that possible.
To quote Wiki: There is not much revealed about the Merovingian's origin, but from what both he and the Oracle say, he was a program made to regulate behavior amongst the "Bluepills" and report back with results. After the collapse of the first Matrix, he became obsolete[1] as the newer versions presented an illusion of choice to the hard-wired humans, causing the behavioral manipulation to be more indirect than the Merovingian's more straightforward methods. Instead of accepting deletion, he retreated into the programming of the Matrix, disguised as a human, and resolved to aid other programs who have become obsolete. He is seen as a hero to exiled programs, and as an impulsive and selfish opportunist to others. He is disillusioned by the idea of choice amongst humans, which resulted in his program becoming obsolete in the Matrix, and believes that the only governing principle of the universe is that of cause and effect.

I haven't watched them in a while, but isn't this a little like LOST?
Like the second movie sucked but didn't seem so shitty because it was asking a ton of questions. The third movie was probably equally bad but seemed much shittier because it was answering the questions.
