Ordinarily you would expect a POW to resist being sacrificed, but it turns out that many Aztec sacrificial victims were required to perform special dances, lead chants, and perform other public spectacles. So prisoners who we sacrificed according to these rituals must have done so at least somewhat voluntarily. Ritual sacrifice bring one of them, dying in battle was another. The worst thing that could happen to you was to lose a battle but NOT die, and then live on to old age. There was a lot of cross-polinization among prehistoric mexican tribes and a lot of them ended up worshipping variants of the same God, so it's entirely conceivable that they would have shared the Aztecs' beliefs about this.
