You either have to butter them up, or ruthlessly purge the leadership and have a parallel organization ready to step up into the vacuum. Trump did neither.

Consequently, the military backed the government against the Ludendorff putsch attempt. Later, when the Nazis won the elections in ‘32, one of Hitler’s first moves was to have general von Schleicher (head of the military) arrested and executed. The SS was ready to step up with a parallel command structure on day one after. |
