it's entirely obvious now that none of it ever had any actual meaning or correspondence to the fate of the country. people kind of knew this at the time, but the extent to which it was ALL fake was not appreciated.

"yeah, maybe a serious discussion of term limits will help restore the deliberative democracy that the founders intended for us" - this wasn't an insane thing to think in the 90's, i guess, but it was always unmoored from reality. even then, there were no policies which would have been engendered by this kind of thinking which would have 'saved america' going into the future. it was all just a series of cowardly evasions.
