there was such an avalanche of so much indie music of high technical/production/songwriting quality coming out back then that it became 'worthless' in a sense.
sort of like how 2020s NBA seems kind of lame because teams 'cracked the code' and even mediocre players are basically stronger/more athletic than peak Michael Jordan. it devalues the product somehow.
i remember listening to my hipster GF's indie ipod and it was like 10000 songs that were all sort of 'better' than anything that came out of 80s/90s indie, but also sort of interchangeable and boring as a result.

Arcade Fire solid second.

“Indie” is too broad of a label. At this point it’s basically meaning any non-classical/country/screamo music by white people with real instruments between 2000 and 2020.
But in no specific order I would say:
death cab/postal service, modest mouse, bloc party, foals, arcade fire, interpol, silversun pickups, band of horses, war on drugs, beach house, the XX, Bombay bicycle club, the national, two door cinema club, Franz Ferdinand, grizzly bear, local natives, lcd soundsystem, future islands, phoenix, yeah yeah yeahs, fleet foxes, empire of the Sun, m83, Arctic monkeys, the strokes, cage the elephant, tame impala, metric, vampire weekend. There are a few more.
Picking a best is impossible - how do you compare silversun pickups to beach house?
Im leaving the killers, white stripes, keane and muse off this list. They are rock bands but very far away from what someone would consider “indie” if you listened to the rest of the list.

Lot of good stuff itt although there’s some of the inevitable attempts to out-indie other people. I like Beach House, too, but to put them in the same importance conversation as Arcade Fire or the White Stripes, etc. is laughable.
For endurance, I think it’s The National and Arcade Fire. Still both touring and have listenable music, and it’s not gimmicky or wildly different than what they were playing 15-20 years ago.
This thread confirms that many of us are 38-44.
