So it occurred to me that she might have been absolutely sick of having a dependent small human waking her up at night, bothering her throughout the day, screaming her head off and not giving her a minute of peace and quiet. I've asked all my friends and cousins with children if they ever smack/hurt their kids.

They ALL, even the nicest ones, answered that it was nearly impossible to not lose your mind and do it at least several times during certain stages.

I’ve said many times before on XO that whether you have shitty kids or not involves a lot of luck (or you can call it genetics if you prefer, but it can also be a nurture issue when you don’t know what you’re doing, and a lot of the genetics involved can be hard to discern based on the relatives you know closely, so it operates as luck in practice). I know people who are definitely more motivated and committed parents than me who have kids that I would resent if I was their parent. A kid who is mentally or physically defective, especially mentally when it also interferes with their ability to bond, is more likely to provoke this feeling in me, and per the commentary above about prehistoric rates of infanticide, etc. I do believe that my ancestors dealt with this issue by rejecting any kids they had who sucked in a similar way. 21st century western capitalism exerts stronger selection pressure on parents of mentally and physically incapable people, and if you have a kid who is likely to cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars or millions of dollars in additional expenses and untold amounts of stress and heartache before they reach 18 it’s a rational response. This is why anyone who says they support banning abortion before 20 weeks is retarded. It’s not until the 20 week appointment that you find out “oh shit our baby will be missing a left ventricle and if it survives birth it will be 99% certain to die by age 12 and will require millions of dollars of surgery to even get that far” and should have the ability to say “uh yeah no thanks, tough break, defective baby.”
