Think Arcade Fire, Tame Impala, and Vampire Weekend. These bands weren’t just trendy for a minute, they created music that will be rediscovered by future generations. The whole indie scene back then, with its obsession over vinyl records and basement shows, had a vibe that felt real. It wasn’t about being perfect or polished, and that kind of authenticity always ends up looking cool in hindsight.
And yeah, hipster culture gets flak, but things like artisanal coffee, thrifted clothes, and microbreweries were actually pretty awesome. Millennials turned making your own kombucha into a legit hobby, and even though it felt a little much at the time, that level of creativity is going to age well. Sure, not everything was a win (we don’t need the ironic mustaches back), but the focus on craft and individuality will be what people remember when they look back on the era.

This isn’t the legacy of millennials at all. It was a reheated helping of leftovers from the 90s indie scene (ie Gen X) that was 1000x better and actually did the heavy lifting on all of these cultural trends ie urban renewal and gentrification shock trooping, overrating overpriced local restaurants and coffee shops, wildly overrating and overpaying for craft beer, fucking live music that wasn’t a giant festival (also ripped off from Gen X) ie local music venues completely died on millennials’ watch albeit for a variety of understandable but still shitty reasons.
No the enduring cultural legacy of millennials is not what white people were into in the 00s, which was mostly just at attempt to get away with maintaining white majority spaces without being called out for it, thus the appeals to Gen X’s pre-sanctified cultural values. The legacy of millennials is the lowest common denominator brownification of culture, ie reality shows supplanting scripted content, YouTube and social media supplanting traditional media, awesome huge 90s fake tits being rejected in favor of huge ass BBL deformities, capeshit crowding out all other filmmaking in Hollywood except for unprofitable DEI awards bait, and the fagification of hip hop by making all the biggest stars into non-threatening pussies like Drake and Kanye and mumble rap as the ultimate neutering of hip hop as a pure opiate of the masses sound track. The only thing millennials have to hang their hat on was the golden age of TV, but that was all really made by boomers and Gen X, also the product of heavy lifting done by Gen X in the late 90s, and the heroes and best shows were all 100% for and about boomers.

If they went to college, yes, but that was only like 15-20% of boomers. If they didn’t go to college they didn’t rise that high unless they were innate gunner-strivers and even then they likely also needed pretty elite social intelligence to overcome the presumption that they were too dumb bc they didn’t go to college. Though plenty of them still had beautiful large SFHs in good school districts and could afford nice vacations and could help pay for college (or not), and could afford to get divorced, all on much lower incomes, because all major life expenses—houses, cars, higher education, health care, etc.—were so much cheaper.
