You have the choice of the following:

(a) $3M right now with no strings attached

--or--

(b) You will be assigned to a college baseball game this weekend between two teams that are each very approximately 50th in the country in RPI ( https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/baseball/d1/rpi ). You will pitch the first 3 innings of the game for one of the teams.

If you allow 12 or more earned runs, you get nothing.

If you hold the other team to fewer than 12 earned runs, you will receive $2M times the number of runs under 12 that you held the other team to. E.g., if you allow 7 earned runs in the 3 innings, you will receive $10M.

Which do you pick? How many runs do you think you can hold the other team to? How are you training between now and this weekend?

Why? Pitching would be way more fun and has way more upside. Holding the other team to just a couple runs in at least two of the innings should be possible. They'll probably swing for the fences and hit a bunch of pop ups.

I’m taking the 3MM but this is not a crazy hypo. Have you ever seen a baseball games where a team runs through their bullpen and puts a utility player in to pitch? No one can hit their garbage pitches because the major league players’ batting is adapted to hit 95 MPH burners. If you think you can put balls in the strike zone and that you have good fielders behind you, taking the gamble on pitching is not totally irresponsible.

Exactly. I'm pitching and probably leaving with at least $10M. And also, the other team likely won't maximize their small-ball running scoring. The cr strategy for them would be take 1 or 2 strikes and try to hit line drives to reach base and advance the runners. In reality, they would all swing for the fences, often striking out and hitting pop ups. Plus, I can get some good movement going on my pitches and mix some curves and sinkers in there when they aren't expecting it.
