Is it completely retarded to spend 35% of monthly take-home on a nice ass house?

Feels like a potential One Wrong Move setup. The house sounds great, but you have to try and envision what it’ll feel like 5+ years from now when the new factor is totally gone.
My own view is above a certain size threshold, more house isn’t a great return on investment and doesn’t move the needle as much as you’d want it to based on the cost.

Aren’t you Low Income? So like a $3k mortgage?
Also aren’t you an Engineer? If you get fired just find new shit to Engineer. It’s not like you’re a Fake Job Guy who’s fucked if he loses his sinecure.
If ITE2 hits btw you’ll probably be able to refinance at a lower rate btw

i wouldn't be comfortable with that, but i am probably an outlier. our mortgage is $2700/mo and take-home monthly is like $57k this year. we got this place when monthly take-home was probably $10k, and even then i guess it was a bit low.
what's your age, and how much $$$ do you have socked away for retirement and in investments. that would make a big difference for me. if you're like 35-40 and have $500k in 401ks and can still put away a decent amount, the house is fine. if not, i'd think very carefully before doing it.

I really don't think you should worry, do the math on a 3.5% rate versus whatever it is now and what that would do to your monthly payment. Assume if you get fired that rates will be lower. Engineers can just find jobs nbd imho. If the entire economy is Ruined, rates will be lower. If it's just You that's Ruined, then become Homeless and drink all day.
The only thing that gives me pause itt is you being like "my boss and the CEO have my back." no "CEO" has anyone's back, ever. If anything you buying the House is their trigger to be like, "time to Reassign him and make an Indian or a Woman his boss. He's trapped 😏," or some evil nonsense
Also it's not the purchase price that gets you necessarily it's the proportionately higher insurance, property tax, HVAC, and a Roof costing like $40,000k to replace instead of whatever. all of that is the straw that broke disco fries' proverbial back imo.

Brother I think this is 180 but just a few thoughts from long time & many time homeownermo.
The good is that location fucking matters and if you're happy take that first and foremost. Additionally "value" will increase so think about cost locked in right now and FOMO for future, there's value.
The two things to watch are taxes/insurance and improvement costs.
On taxes/insurance, can you afford if those 2x in 5 years? That should be your baseline assumption, because everything is insane right now with inflation, climate risks, insurance greed, Boomer upgrading prices, you name it it's shit. So just price that in. If you're comfortable, great.
Even if you think the house is in "great shape" do you have 10% of home's value to spend on repairs in next 2 years? Bank that in, assume major shit is going down because the owner has lied about the furnace or the stove or the plumbing or something. "Nice windows" lol okay brother, just pepper thy angus.
IF YOU CAN DO those two cost things, you're fine, slide and let do.
