He thinks that the problem is a lack of awareness and uses nuclear weapons as an example of how humanity rose to the occassion against an existential threat. But the way that was solved is nuclear powers built so many that it made the threat of nuclear war the same as human extinction. Meanwhile, nations the didn't develop weapons are now exploited by nuclear powers.

Just like climate change and nukes, AI can't be solved unless there is worldwide cooperation and non-compliant countries are forced to comply. This is unthinkable right now. If we did stop developing we would just be taken over by a country that didn't.

It's the same reason AI companies are racing toward developing them while warning everyone about the risks. They don't dissolve their own companies because they know someone else will develop it in their stead, and they'd rather be the ones in control and profiting.

This is empirically correct.

The only answer to malicious AI is more AI. AI Riders of Rohan to combat the AI Nazgul. If we don't have the most powerful malevolent super machines who is going to stop the other powerful malevolent super machines. When the swarm of Chinese AI drones comes for us we better have our own AI swarm drone army ready to go. There is, in fact, no way over but through.

He has the same thinking as climate change activists that if he raises awareness perhaps the people in charge will do something. I think its just motivated by wanting to do something instead of nothing, even if it's futile. At least it makes more sense for him to do it because the risks of AI are still poorly understood.

It's like a prisoners dilemma with billions of prisoners. AI is even harder to solve than climate change and nukes because it's really hard for a small group of people to irreparably fuck up the climate or build a nuke. How do you stop a handful of people from doing it anyway? Start restricting chips the same way we do as uranium?

It definitely presents a new set of challenges. Someone has to be the one out there to steel man the bear argument. This guy is as good as any and he's doing it without the flash or voodoo, which lends credence to his beliefs.

I don't think anyone is arguing that's not a risk except boomers and gen xers like Trump and EPAH that will be knee-jerk dismissive about any new tech.

I'm just saying this guy's whole career is being negative about AI otherwise we would have never heard of him. And he seems like the most credible figure in his space, to his credit.

this topic is already tiresome and played out

you're either preaching about the real danger of gradual disempowerment, shilling for AI/tech interests, or doing engagement bait "discourse" for clicks. this guy being in the latter category

nobody who talks about sudden takeover by AI is a serious person

no there's no way i'm listening to an hour of this random guy lol. i was just judging from the timestamp summaries under the video

if true, great. gradual disempowerment of humans is the real danger from AI. no one talks about it because it doesn't get clicks and because the people who benefit from AI don't actually want to stop AI development (and therefore don't want to bring attention to the real dangers from it, that aren't strawmen)

I think gradual disempowerment is just one of the mechanisms of the risks but they have to rely on bite sized soundbites because like you no one wants to listen to an hour of a faggot lisp about it.

He's a lot less clickbaity and alarmist than Ed Zitron and those who are focused on AI is a bad business investment. At least this guy isn't telling you what to do or not do with your money. He's just saying here are the reasons it might go tits up.
