Horrible cold over the holiday which completely sucked but I watched two Scottish historical epics from 1995. Boy they really don't make em like they used to. Masculine men, feminine women. There's only one black character in Rob Roy, just some peasant dood who never speaks. None in Braveheart. Crazy these two came out back to back. They're basically the Same Movie. I like Rob Roy slightly better but obviously both good. All the women characters are just hapless damsels in distress. We need to turn back the clock. Modernity has been a complete disaster for the human race.

One of the storytelling tropes I see in this genre that I think is totally absent today is the device of 'bad shit happens repeatedly to hero without explanation.' We live in the era of over-rationalization. Today's writers would never have just some random misfortune befall the hero. That's what makes it a masculine story. Bad shit happens and you just have to overcome it. Bad things from the past are never discussed. You just keep moving forward. Today's stories there's just too much discussion about the meaning of things. Not everything in life has a meaning. Sometimes it's just a challenge you have to get through.
