Using the full range of the spectrum from D to A. I would then respond to requests for explanations of their shitty grades with further AI slop.

The context is that I forbid use of Gen AI, but wink wink nudge nudge suggest that if they cheat, and God help their souls recover from their slothful and deceitful ways, they should be doing so thoughtfully and carefully, such that I can't tell. In this class, half of the papers had similar first lines and similar, shitty main arguments. Many reused phrases from the prompt in incoherent ways, as if they just tried to plug it in and let it do what it do.

Education is a joke now and I'm at wit's end. I've never been sincerely angered by students before, but disrespecting my time when I've always made it a point to give detailed feedback hits home, as if a personal slap to the face.

What's stopping you from just giving them a zero if you judge their paper to be AI

I mean I know the answer is that your administrators will chimp out after the kids and their parents complain. But that's what you're going to have to do in order to stop them from using AI

Lol you should read your own post back to yourself

If that's how lex really feels about this (I'll let him speak for himself) then he should just leave the teaching profession asap

I agree that future classes of students will be just as likely - in fact, they will be much more likely - to use AI to do their assignments. So he either takes a stand on it now, and accepts having a reputation for zero tolerance on AI, or he spends the rest of his career going through the motions for a bunch of kids who are only there because they have the expectation that they can use AI to do all their work for them

It's not at all clear (to me) that having a reputation as a zero tolerance for AI professor would work out badly for him. But if it would, and he dislikes kids using AI to do their assignments, he should just get a new job. Because it's going to get much much "worse"

like any other job, people are often forced to do things that are destructive their goals because thats how the organization works.

you might as well be telling a junior associate in biglaw "hey you've gotta send boundaries! just tell your clients and partners you don't respond to emails outside of normal working! otherwise they'll keep doing it."

im not speaking for lex here. perhaps he disagrees. but i know plenty of professors and they all complain about grade inflation and lowering standards that they have no real power to change.

Looking at exit options now, not flame. Partly it is humility, as said below. I'm not sure the teaching I can offer well will benefit many students, and, selfishly, I don't want to spend the rest of my life trying to hold back the water with my hands.

Higher education in its current form is objectively Doomed and I strongly agree with you looking for other career paths

I would offer constructive advice or encouragement but I don't really have any. It looks pretty dire. The only desirable options for educators will probably be group tutoring the children of the wealthy and (lower paid) teaching of kids in intentional pods run by groups of like-minded and intelligent but not as wealthy parents

Hoping for the best for you regardless

Thanks, man. I fundamentally agree. Education is going to survive best as a sort of bespoke, artisan-esque service, perhaps more like the original idea of LACs. The path there is going to be painful, though.

He needs to grade not on just the papers themselves, but also on a short presentation followed by questions where he grills them on the content of their paper. the ones using AI won't be able to stand up to any scrutiny because students won't understand what "they" themselves have written.

I think part of the issue is that a new generation of teachers will have to be good enough with AI tools to teach them. I am just learning how to use ChatGPT myself for specific job purposes, so I am very aware that my skills are nowhere near good enough to teach the tools. Looking for academics who both have that skillset and the scholarly knowledge to teach humanities disciplines is going to be a disaster for at least a decade, I would imagine. It's not apocalyptic, but I'm finding myself foisted into the old guard by my training and disposition. Maybe it is time to pack my bags, so to speak.

I do suspect AI is going to give kids too much temptation to fall into laziness, though, even with good teachers. In a different class earlier in the semester, I asked non-majors in comp sci-adjacent fields if they actually used AI to explain why python scripts work or if they just used it to generate scripts. Many kept insisting that it *can* be a good tool to learn python, but, curiously, no one would affirm that they actually used it in this sort of way. I think this will be most students, even at good schools. (I am not teaching at a TTT, for the record.)

i think part of the problem is how weve made a broad university education a requirement for any white collar job. it's no different than k-12 education being made worse for all involved by eliminating gifted classss in the name of equity.

if someone wants to just get the education required to actually do their job, they should be allowed to. and if they want a broader scope they should have the opportunity for that too. but if the system just makes it a checkbox, its no suprise that the students who don't want to be there treat it as such.

The real issue is there's just no longer any value in paying for a liberal arts education for 99.9% of people, and that 0.01% of people are capable of getting an equivalent education outside of expensive institutions

There is currently a value in a degree as a credential, but even without AI, that value was already disappearing

I think people are going to be very surprised how quickly the higher education industry truly collapses. It has already quietly started - many colleges would already be shutting down if it wasn't for foreign "students." You are in a niche institution which may actually hold out longer than most imo

i dont think you can get an equivalent experience if you're meaningfully engaged like how education is supposed to be. the internet enabling people to be autodidacts is great. but having people to discuss things with will always provide value. especially when one of them is an expert.

Out the type of class and school.

How about breaking down the assignment so it's more difficult and less efficiency to use AI? E.g., live, in class write down a thesis. Live, in class, write down 3-5 supporting points. Live, in class, write one topic sentence for each of the sections with those 3-5 supporting points. Then, go write the essay.

I actually do use multi-part prompts now, as opposed to the simple and broad ones a few years ago. It helps make it clear who didn't read it at all, but that doesn't always dissuade them, somehow.

Lol

I was early on switching to oral exams, which seems more widespread now, but I still want to (have to) assign term papers. This used to be a fulfilling part of the job in graduate seminars. I like it when interested adults want to really engage with ideas and material, and many still do ime. But this development does seem poised to sour the whole thing.

Are they allowed to use AI to bounce ideas off of? You could say something like, you can talk to a chatbot to improve your understanding and refine your argument but don't turn in words that were written by an LLM. You can even give them a prompt to put in at the beginning of the convo to the effect of, "I'm seeking your help with a paper but I don't want ANY suggestions on wording unless I ask." I've used GPT to edit drafts and it's actually really helpful at talking through ideas, even when the material is pretty technical. I always tell it never to suggest wording and to keep the critique conceptual. I've also only gone to it with near-completed drafts; maybe that could be your line? Write the whole thing before you outsource any thinking to AI?

I swear the chatbots are programmed to suggest wording by default as an intentional way to rot away people's brains

I'm fine with letting them use AI as a partner for brainstorming etc., as the jargon puts it. Agreed with editing, especially if you are specific with what you want it to look for. My issue is with the content that it purely generates, and my experience is that even if students say they are using it in e.g. the way you describe, half at least are just plugging and playing, hence the generic, shitty, even corporate writing styles.

It raises the floor, perhaps. Retards can meet a higher standard than before. But my fear is that it lowers the ceiling for smarter kids that were raised using this as a crutch.
