1. It seems he wants to focus on national sovereignty and self-reliance. I don't think any state can have a bright future if it is substantially reliant on others for basics. In the abstract, this is a good thing to emphasize. The rub would be whether he focuses less on full self reliance and more "keep it within Africa" reliance while he establishes sufficient in-country agricultural, energy, and hygienic capabilities. Many African leaders have tried to go too far too fast and have been met with disastrous results
2. He seems to embrace more autocratic-style rule than democratic rule. This is probably the best approach for much of Africa (and his country) at this point in time. However, this means you're especially dependent on the quality of the current leader class, and the country becomes easier to destabilize from the outside. He needs to identify proper successors right away, particularly if he's old
3. Africa is never going to climb out of its hole until its nations establish sufficient self-governing capabilities and sufficiently robust quality of life. If he can focus on regional cooperation without moving too quickly and/or alienating the Western powers that are needed when moving too quickly, it could be good
In short, I support any/every country trying to establish sovereign rule and the ability to provide for its own people. The reality of Africa is that strong democracies are almost universally disasters-in-waiting. I hope he's successful, but if he's not, America shouldn't step in to save everyone |

Some of the work I've done remotely has involved West Africa, and I think several countries in that region have been leveling up infrastructure and standard of living (still not places I would want to move to). A former company of mine was also investing heavily in Nairobi projects, and I believe they're actually doing pretty well as a country
Beyond that, I don't really know tbh but suspect there have been some incremental gains |
