The meeting before the meeting lasted ninety minutes. Nobody mentioned a game. The conference room overlooked Redmond through a wall of glass so expensive it appeared to have been procured through multiple approval committees. Around the table sat senior Microsoft and Xbox leadership. Screens glowed. Dashboards shimmered. At the head of the table sat Asha Sharma. On the screen behind her appeared executive leadership. The discussion concerned Xbox, but only in the same way that weather forecasts concern individual raindrops.

Asha Sharma: "We need to ensure our portfolio optimization framework remains aligned with long-term player-value realization across all engagement surfaces."

Rajesh Jha, who leads Experiences + Devices, nodded.

Rajesh Jha: "We're seeing strong opportunities in cross-platform ecosystem adjacency, but we need greater monetization harmonization between subscription cohorts and premium-content pathways."

Pavan Davuluri, leader of Windows and Surface Engineering, also nodded.

Pavan Davuluri: "The challenge remains balancing community authenticity with scalable engagement architecture."

A chart appeared. Another chart appeared. Then a heat map. Then a funnel. Then a chart explaining the chart.

Satya Nadella appeared on a large display.

Satya Nadella: "The objective is to meet players wherever they are while empowering every creator and every community through platform-enabled experiences."

Everyone nodded.

Nobody asked whether the players were having fun.

Asha Sharma: "We're still seeing attachment to legacy console-centric thinking among some segments of the audience. Hardware-first users, with high emotional investment in platform tribalism. They still think in terms of Consoles."

The room laughed softly.

Matt Booty: "The console is only one access point. One endpoint within the broader ecosystem."

Asha glanced toward the door.

Asha Sharma: "Speaking of which."

The executives straightened.

The slides disappeared.

The mode changed.

The fans were arriving.

The four men arrived one at a time.

The bricklayer came first. His hands were the sort of hands that cause other men to become self-conscious about their own. The fingers were thick. The knuckles had long since surrendered any interest in aesthetics. They looked less grown than assembled. One got the impression that if he accidentally leaned against a wall, the wall would apologize. Years of masonry had left their mark. Concrete, mortar, block, rebar, winter, summer, ladders, scaffolding, gravity. Everything was visible. Nothing had been hidden.

The firefighter arrived next. He possessed the broad, healthy look of a man whose body had spent decades performing useful work and had somehow emerged largely victorious. Asha looked as though she acted upon things.

Nothing about her appeared accidental. Every gesture seemed calibrated. Every sentence arrived fully assembled. The four men carried decades of accumulated experience. Asha carried strategy. They looked like products of systems. She looked like someone who managed systems.

The bricklayer's hands alone probably outweighed her laptop.

Asha smiled. It was the smile of someone who had already spent the morning discussing portfolio optimization, platform strategy, growth vectors, monetization pathways, organizational alignment, and long-term ecosystem health.

Now she was about to discuss Xbox with four men who still referred to the Genesis as "Sega."

Pause.

Lawyer: "Games usually showed up somewhere around slide forty-three."

The firefighter laughed.

The veteran nodded.

The bricklayer nodded.

Asha smiled.

Asha Sharma: "Games matter."

Lawyer: "Good."

Bricklayer: "Very good."

Firefighter: "Excellent start."

Asha leaned forward.

Asha Sharma: "What do you want from Xbox?"

The bricklayer answered first.

Bricklayer: "My son plays The Video Games all day."

Asha Sharma: "Xbox specifically?"

Bricklayer: "All of them."

Asha Sharma: "And that's Xbox's fault?"

Bricklayer: "I'm willing to blame everybody."

The firefighter nodded.

Firefighter: "Reasonable position."

The lawyer raised a hand.

Lawyer: "I have a question."

The other three sighed.

Asha Sharma: "Go ahead."

Lawyer: "Do you actually play games?"

The room became quiet.

Asha smiled.

A practiced executive smile.

Asha Sharma: "I spend a great deal of time with games."

Lawyer: "That is not what I asked."

The firefighter laughed immediately.

The veteran closed his eyes.

The bricklayer shook his head.

Asha laughed.

Asha Sharma: "Not as much as you do."

Lawyer: "That's not reassuring."

Asha Sharma: "Do I need to be a gamer to run Xbox?"

Lawyer: "No."

Pause.

Lawyer: "But it helps to understand why people bought the thing in the first place."

The veteran unexpectedly joined in.

Veteran: "Mission clarity."

Asha Sharma: "Meaning?"

Veteran: "Original Xbox had one mission."

Asha Sharma: "Which was?"

Veteran: "Games."

Pause.

Veteran: "Halo."

Pause.

Lawyer: "I think we're focusing too much on Xbox."

Asha Sharma: "This is an Xbox meeting."

Lawyer: "Xbox is downstream of Gaming."

Asha Sharma: "Fair."

Lawyer: "And Gaming is downstream of Everything."

The room became quiet.

The lawyer folded his hands.

Lawyer: "The Absolute State of Gaming is Grim."

The sentence landed with unusual force.

Even Asha paused.

Lawyer: "And it is tantamount to the State of Everything."

Asha Sharma: "That's a very broad statement."

Lawyer: "It is also true."

The lawyer leaned forward.

Lawyer: "The average AAA game now requires six years, eight years, sometimes longer. Budgets resemble public works projects. Studios employ enough people to govern a small principality. Every release requires postmortems, roadmaps, corrective action plans, transparency initiatives, community engagement frameworks, restructuring announcements, and eventually layoffs."

The firefighter nodded.

Firefighter: "Sounds familiar."

Lawyer: "Of course it sounds familiar. Every institution in the Western world sounds like this now."

The room became quiet.

Lawyer: "Universities. Hospitals. Newspapers. Governments. Publishers. Developers. Same symptoms. More administrators. More process. More strategy. More meetings. More slides."

He glanced briefly at Asha.

Lawyer: "No offense."

Asha Sharma: "Some taken."

The room laughed.

Lawyer: "The product becomes secondary. The process becomes primary. Then everyone wonders why the product deteriorates."

The veteran unexpectedly joined in.

Veteran: "Mission drift."

Lawyer: "Exactly."

Veteran: "Seen it before."

Lawyer: "Everyone has."

The lawyer continued.

Pause.

Lawyer: "The answer is that every institution eventually begins managing itself instead of serving its purpose."

The room became very quiet.

Even Asha appeared to be considering the argument.

Lawyer: "Which brings me to indies."

The firefighter immediately nodded.

Bricklayer: "Good topic."

Veteran: "Strong topic."

Lawyer: "Indie titles offer a Reprieve."

The capitalization was audible.

Lawyer: "They are one of the few remaining places where a game still resembles a game."

Asha Sharma: "Go on."

Lawyer: "Somebody has an idea."

Pause.

Lawyer: "They make the idea."

Pause.

Lawyer: "Then they sell the idea."

Pause.

Lawyer: "Remarkably efficient."

The firefighter laughed.

Lawyer: "No ecosystem. No metaverse. No strategic transformation initiative. No five-year content roadmap. No platform convergence strategy."

Pause.

Lawyer: "Just a game."

Asha Sharma: "You're describing a very romantic version of indie development."

Lawyer: "Correct."

Asha Sharma: "Reality is more complicated."

Lawyer: "Reality has a Liberal Bias."

The room went quiet. Not because anyone was offended. Because the joke had wandered too close to the truth. Asha remained composed, as executives do. The lawyer looked pleased with himself. The bricklayer folded his huge hands and stared toward the window. The veteran did not move. The firefighter leaned back, thinking about pensions, lawns, and perhaps Sega. He had been quiet for several minutes. This generally meant something unfortunate was coming.

Firefighter: "Can I ask a question?"

Asha Sharma: "Of course."

Firefighter: "Is Todd Howard actually as short as he appears?"

The room froze.

Asha laughed politely.

Asha Sharma: "I don't think that's relevant."

Firefighter: "No, I'm serious."

Asha Sharma: "I gathered that."

Firefighter: "Because Starfield took a very long time."

Asha Sharma: "It did."

Firefighter: "And I was wondering if the two facts were connected."

The bricklayer nodded thoughtfully.

Bricklayer: "Interesting question."

Asha Sharma: "It is not."

Firefighter: "You sure?"

Asha Sharma: "Very."

The veteran finally looked up.

Veteran: "Answer the man."

Asha laughed.

Asha Sharma: "I'm not discussing people's physical characteristics."

Veteran: "Are you just saying that because you don't know who Todd Howard is?"

Pause.

Veteran: "Discuss the studio."

The lawyer, who had been waiting for an opportunity to contribute, immediately seized it.

Lawyer: "For the record, I'm six foot four."

Asha Sharma: "Thank you."

Lawyer: "I don't think height is the issue."

Firefighter: "Interesting."

Lawyer: "The issue is that a game took nearly a decade."

The room became quiet.

Lawyer: "That's long enough to obtain a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, a law degree, fail at a startup, recover emotionally, and begin a second career."

Bricklayer: "Strong point."

Lawyer: "At some point the question stops being 'How tall is management?' and becomes 'What exactly has management been doing?'"

The firefighter nodded.

Firefighter: "That's actually better than my question."

Lawyer: "Most are."

The room laughed.

Lawyer: "Look, I don't care if a studio head is five feet tall or seven feet tall. I care whether they can ship a game before the hardware generation ends."

Veteran: "Mission completion."

Lawyer: "Exactly."

Veteran: "Nine years is a long mission."

Lawyer: "Particularly when the result is a game people stop discussing three weeks later."

The room became quiet.

Asha Sharma: "You're being a little harsh."

Lawyer: "Harsh is spending hundreds of millions of dollars and discovering the internet has moved on."

Bricklayer: "There it is."

Firefighter: "Now we're asking the right questions."

Asha leaned back.

Asha Sharma: "So your position is that development cycles are too long."

Lawyer: "My position is that gaming has forgotten how to finish things."

The veteran nodded.

The firefighter nodded.

The bricklayer nodded.

Asha stared at the table for a moment.

Asha Sharma: "That may be the most useful feedback I've heard all day."

Firefighter: "Good."

Pause.

Firefighter: "But I still think the other question is worth investigating."

The room erupted.
