they want someone who's above average at virtually everything, whereas a lot of other prestigious schools prefer someone who's exceptional in a single area.

ie: the math geek who gets into MIT easily doesn't have a prayer in hell at West Point despite having an SAT score 200 points above its median, because he can't pass the physical and doesn't have a wide breadth of EC's.

and vice versa. i wouldn't have stood a prayer in hell of getting into harvard, but probably could've gotten into WP.

Very true. The military needs smart people as well, especially tech-smart people.

The physical standards to get in aren't THAT exacting. You can't be fat and you have to be able to run and do situps and pushups to a reasonable specification. I remember looking it up once and the standards were about the same as to get that physical fitness award they used to give out in elementary school.

"It's not like wars are fought at 4am."

actually they are. they don't schedule wars to begin promptly at 9am and end at 5pm. they begin and end at all hours.

in terms of GPA/LSAT, it's admittedly a lot less selective than a lot of other prestigious schools, but they aim for well-rounded candidates.

Most the people applying there can only get to the military by being enlisted but for some fucked up reason they think they can goto college and become an officer. IMHO too much was made of the name of the school and not enough about how well she did -- she was clearly not the kind of student who gets in somewhere and then coasts if she made PBK at Princeton. To me, that's the bigger issue.

That being said, I think West Point deserves all the accolades it gets. You have to be very sharp AND a very tough person to get in & get through.

They sure rock state schools' asses when it comes to producing Rhodes & Marshall scholars, and unless by good state school you mean Berkeley and Michigan, when it comes to law school admission.

Their admissions numbers are equal to decent state schools. UM,Berk,UF,UT,Uva are all more selective than the SAs. As far as Rhodes and Marshall, I don't believe that they produce more Rhodes than a good state school and Marshall scholarships are heavily weighted by the fact that people at WP or NA have written papers advised by people that actually lived in Bosnia or Haiti and Marshall committees love that shit.

(Updated 11/30/04) West Point is 4th on the list of total winners for Rhodes Scholarships, 7th for Marshall and 4th on the list of Hertz Fellows. In each case the institutions with more scholarship winners also have larger student bodies.

http://www.dean.usma.edu/Scholarships/

I hope Stanford, Columbia and the other "top" private universities are ashamed of themselves for trailing a a "good" state school equivalent in Rhodes scholars. For God's sakes, their admissions numbers are equal to the decent state schools.

How dare those bastards competing for the Marshall write papers advised by people living and making history! How are those in the ivory tower to compete?????

Perhaps an insitution's output is more important than its input. And this all comes from a place whose goal is to produce future leaders, not scholars.

A former classmate of mine is at West Point. I'm surprised it's supposed to be such a selective school, because this guy had a 3.0 GPA (no honors classes or anything) if even that and 1220 SAT. He was in a few activities, but he wasn't particularly good at any of them, and he was solidly middle-class. He didn't even get into BU, but somehow he ended up at west point. He was in a sport, but he was really, really bad and never played.

Kelly went to my high school, Pine View School for the Highly Gifted in Sarasota, from grades 4 through 9. In terms of ability, he is head and shoulders above many at harvard, assuming IQ is a somewhat accurate guage of smartness. Obviously I don't know precisely how many standard deviations above the mean he tested at, but Trump himself mentioned that all selectees were 200+.

No, he selected the people that would make for the best tv.

Maybe they all got 200 plus on the emode IQ test online, but that;s about it.

Statistically, 200 IQs are hard to find, and the ones that you do find, chances are, would not all be telegenic/good choices for tv. In order to get a group that's as loudmouthed/creates good tv as this one, youd have to have like 100 people with 200 plus IQs to choose from, and that would be impossible.

I have a friend who went to West Point for a year. He didn't like how strict they were, so he decided to transfer. Despite having terrible grades, he was accepted by Harvard and many other top schools. West Point is an "elite" school from what I know.

I don't see why Harvard would accept a transfer with terrible grades just because he was from West Point.

Your story sounds like horseshit.

Same reason people on this board are crying about getting into a top 14 with a 3.3-3.5/164-166 and Academy guys don't have to sweat it.

Isn't a 3.3 like top 15% at West Point?

the most outstanding friend I ever had went to West Point. Cool guy (everyone liked him, and he was student body president), really smart, awesome wrestler and cross country guy (placed in state in both- I trained with him a lot, his not quite elite athletic ability was totally offset by an insane mental toughness), big Christian, second oldest in a huge family (more than 10 brothers and sisters), just as solid as can be. Went to West Point, the general in charge there would call him to get advice on how to deal with his teenage daughter. When he graduated, ranked highest in his class, he was honor grad in Ranger school. Later, the same general at West Point got moved to Bosnia, he personally selected him to come work directly under him there. I've known plenty of people who went to Ivies, most of whom were smarter than this guy, but none of them compare as an all around dude.

Subject: dispel some myths...

I am a USNA grad, so I am biased, but I will tell you what I saw there. As mentioned by others, most people there were above average and well-rounded in most areas. There were some geniuses and a few "rocks" as we called them. About 90% of every class played a varsity sport in HS and a good many were captains of their teams. Academically, every student must take a demanding core curriculum heavy on the hard sciences regardless of major. Finally, we did produce 3 Rhodes Scholars this year, second only to Harvard I believe. Hope that helps.

Hm, I think that goes under the provision of the Rhodes scholarship that says applicants must prove to have an interest in sports or something like that. Most smart ivy leaguers prolly sit in their room in study. Personally, I respect West Point grads more than harvard grads. But thats just me.

Get real. It's not like Ivy grads are "studying all day." Maybe MIT. Maybe Caltech.

I would virtually gurantee that people at the service academies study more than most Ivy-Leaguers. Why? (1) As was mentioned above all of these people take a ton of hard science classes and (2) they amount of discipline and rigor required to complete UG at a service academy is insane.
