Fall 2002 Survey of Callbacks & Offers

‐ Introduction ‐

For best use of this survey, review this section carefully!

The Lingo

OCI ‐ On‐campus interviewing

Employer ‐ Ok, this may seem obvious, but when we say ‘Employer’ we actually mean one of two things:

(1) One firm; one city. ie: Kirkland & Ellis, New York vs. Kirkland & Ellis, Chicago.

(2) One firm; firm wide. ie: Jones Day is considered a multi‐office employer. Although they want to know which cities you are interested in, in rank order, they only want to interview each candidate one time during OCI.

Schedule ‐ Some employers will choose to interview in 20 minute slots, resulting in 21 interviews in a day; others will opt for 30 minute interview slots, resulting in 15 interviews in a day. Many employers will want to see more than 15 or 21 students during their visit to campus, so they will send several interviewers and request several schedules.

Bid ‐ Your initial selection of employer with whom you would like to interview.

Interview ‐ The interview that takes place on‐campus, also referred to as a ‘screening interview’.

Callback ‐ An invitation to return to the law firm for further (typically a half day) interviewing with additional attorneys at the firm.

Offer ‐ Offer for employment for the following summer.

Methodology

All of the 2Ls (including transfer students) who participated in OCI last fall received a personalized survey listing all of the firms with whom they interviewed on‐campus. We ask respondents to indicate the firms that invited them for a callback and those that made them an offer. We also ask permission to use participant’s grades in conjunction with their survey responses.

A note on CONFIDENTIALITY . . . to protect the anonymity of students who participated in the survey, if there were less than 4 students respondents for a particular employer, that employer was removed from the survey. This knocked out 11 firms.

And, a note on the RESPONSE RATE . . . with the help of LSA, over 70% of the Class of 2004 returned the survey. While that is plenty to create a meaningful sample, it does not necessarily represent the experience of ALL students. Everyone had a different market strategy, a unique plate of achievements and skills, and different strengths and weaknesses in the interviewing

process. One key is to look at the number of bids that were placed, determine the amount of interview slots available (see “How to Use this Survey”), and then look at the actual number of interviews reported taken. In many cases you can see that the numbers may not exactly mirror a great data sample. Do not over estimate what these numbers suggest.

Facts & Figures – Survey At A Glance

Last year, a total of 209 2Ls (including transfer students) placed bids in the eAttorney system. Of them – 197 participated in this survey. They reported on 274 of 292 interviewing employers, and we used data for 208 of these employers. Those students reported the following results:

• 3,829 on‐campus interviews

• 1529 callback invitations

• 1086 callbacks taken

• 714 of the callbacks taken resulted in offers for summer employment

So what does this all mean? Fall OCI is a pretty good deal for most students. It does not mean that each student will get around 8 callbacks and 4 offers. Some students may have 20 callback invitations and others may have only 5. As a starting strategy, you should bid for all of the employers that you are interested in, and try to obtain a full interview schedule.

You should continue to assess your performance throughout the interview season:

• If you get several callback invitations in the early part of the interview season, you may decide to reduce the number of on‐campus interviews that you do.

• If you are not hearing from employers at all during OCI, but you feel like your interviews are going well, and you are developing a rapport with the interviewers, you should probably just continue on with interviews, and complete your schedule.

• If you are not hearing from employers during OCI, and you leave some of your interviews feeling like they went poorly, you may wish to add interviews to your OCI schedule by signing up through the wait list or into open slots on the day of the interview.

(p.s. – this is why we OCS counselors are around during the interview process – to help you determine your interviewing strategy as the process is taking place – so stop by!)

A note on GRADES . . . the grade ranges on this report are provided for your information & assistance in making bidding decisions ONLY. Please follow these simple Do’s & Don’ts so that we are not forced to remove this feature from the report for future classes:

DO

DON’T

• Look at your average grades and figure out which range you are in for the purpose of this report (75 & below; 76-77; 78 and above)

• Bid for all of the employers you are interested in regardless of your grade range – Don’t select yourself OUT of an employer’s

• Make any statements to employers about your class rank. You are not ranked (even your average is your own estimation), and any judgment about your rank is not permitted.

• Make any statements to employers about your eligibility

applicant pool based on this report.

• Bid for a few extra employers if most of your grades are below the “B” range (74-79).

for honors. The categories in this survey are based on grades at the end of the 1L year. Honors determinations are made after ALL law school grades are submitted. (APPLES & ORANGES!)

• Worry too much about grades. Focus more on your interview skills & do a mock interview if you are worried about a particular issue.

How to Use this Survey – Surviving the Bidding Process!

Don’t drive yourself crazy. There is no science to this!

Some of you will receive this report and feel calmed by the presence of charts, numbers & statistics, others will be agitated and confused. If you are in the second category, my advice to you is disregard this survey.

If you are going to use this survey, it should be for basic guidance on how you select employers and, more importantly, how you rank your bids. The process should go something like this . . .

• Eliminate employers based on your geographical preferences

• Research the remaining employers based on their practice areas, and any other factors that you are looking for in a law firm

• Use this survey to determine how you should rank the employers that are left by:

o Looking at the number of students who bid for them last year – if it is a high number, and there are not a lot of interview schedules, you can assume that it is harder to get on their schedule so rank them higher on your list; if there are a low number of students who bid for them and many slots available, rank them lower and you are still likely to get an interview.

o You can determine the number of interview slots available for the employer by multiplying the number of schedules by either 21 for a twenty minute interview schedule, or by 15 for a thirty minute interview schedule. For example, an employer running 3 thirty minute interview schedules had 45 interview slots to fill; an employer running 4 twenty minute interview schedules had 84 interview slots.

o If they had a good number of students who interviewed with them from every grade category, but they only called back students from the “78 and above” category, you can probably assume that they were a little bit picky about grades.

Good luck during the bidding process & Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Fall 2004 Survey of Callbacks

Each summer we hear questions asking how concerned employers are about grades during the fall on‐campus interview process (OCI), such as: Are there grade cut offs? Which employers might have grade thresholds that might take me out of consideration?

How the Report was Developed

This year, we asked employers who attended the Fall 2004 On‐Campus Interview Program to tell us to whom they extended callback invitations after the initial on‐campus interview. To expand our knowledge base, we also included callback data from students who got interviews outside of OCI. You should not draw any conclusions from the absence of specific employers on this list. We did not receive callback information from every employer, and employer data was only used if there were four or more callbacks listed to avoid the risk of identifying a student. We took the callback information and correlated it to each student’s first year law school grade average. For each employer, we determined the low, median, and high grade average figures for students who were extended a callback.

Reading the Report

Keep in mind that this data is only from one year and that grades are only one item of consideration in the hiring process. Researching employers, critically evaluating your interests and abilities, and honing your interviewing skills are of utmost importance. As you review this report, note that although the lowest grade average reported might indicate an employer’s grade threshold, it might not. It is less helpful to note the highest grade average reported, since common sense tells us that very good grades rarely have a downside. The median grade average category is subject to further interpretation.

Observe the narrow difference between the 180.25 median and the 181.88 highest grade average for Willard & Dershewitz. This means the grade distinction was very shallow for half the students called back whose grade averages were in the upper part of the grading scale. This suggests that Willard & Dershewitz is fairly grade conscious, at least for the callbacks reported that particular fall. The same logic can be applied to Abrams & Kynaston, except now the data swings the other way: a very shallow grade separation between lowest grade average and the median for students who were in the lower part of the grading scale. Abrams & Kynaston appears to be open to any student who can interview strongly. The callback data for the last employer, Woo & Casaleggi, exhibits a fairly even spread between the median and the lowest grade average and highest grade average reported. Woo & Casaleggi does not appear to swing significantly one way or the other with respect grade consciousness; this makes them a solid choice for anyone who is attracted to them.

The Bottom Line

Do not interpret the survey too scientifically. From our past experience and review of this year’s data , there are a number of employers whose grade average threshold is low and that success in callbacks lies more with the individual than with the grades.

The keys to a successful fall are researching potential employers and having strong interview skills, including feeling comfortable with the conversational nature of interviews and being prepared with solid questions. 2

Fall 2005 Survey of Callbacks

Each summer we hear questions asking how concerned employers are about grades during the fall on‐campus interview process (OCI), such as: Are there grade cut offs? Which employers might have grade thresholds that might take me out of consideration?

How the Report Was Developed

Every year, we ask employers who attended the Fall On‐Campus Interview Program to tell us to whom they extended callback invitations after the initial on‐campus interview.

Keep in mind that this survey covers the past two Fall OCI programs, and then only if we received usable callback data from the employer. Grades are only one item of consideration in the hiring process. Researching employers, critically evaluating your interests and abilities, and honing your interviewing skills are of utmost importance.

By the way, remember that employers are not permitted to pre‐screen students and decide who gets accepted or rejected for an on‐campus interview. The Fall OCI program is an extraordinary window of opportunity where you can really highlight your story and make your case for a callback during an interview. Feel free to contact any of the counselors in Career Services if you feel the need to strategize or get feedback on your employment goals for next summer.

As you review this report, note that although the lowest grade average reported might indicate an employer’s grade threshold, it might not. It is less helpful to note the highest grade average reported, since common sense tells us that very good grades rarely have a downside. The median grade average category is subject to further interpretation.

Quote:

THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO LAW SCHOOL OFFICE OF CAREER SERVICES Survey of Fall Interview Callbacks Students frequently ask us how grades will affect their opportunities in the on-campus interview program. Do employers use grade cut offs? Which employers have grade thresholds that might eliminate a student from consideration? Are there geographic locations in which employers appear to be more concerned with grades? Is there a specific GPA that could eliminate a student from consideration by certain employers, or conversely, guarantee an employer’s consideration? There are no simple, quick, or one-word ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers to these questions. The most appropriate ”quick” take on grades is that employers are much more interested in your University of Chicago legal education and in the interpersonal skills that you demonstrate in the interview than they are in a specific grade or estimated GPA (remember, no official GPA is computed here until the time of graduation). How We Compile the Callback Survey In response to student requests for some information--however imperfect--about employer grade considerations, we ask employers who attended the Fall On-Campus Interview Program to tell us to whom they extended callback invitations after the initial on-campus interview, and we combine this information with callback data from students who received interviews outside of OCI. We then correlate this callback information with each student’s estimated first year law school grade average, and for each employer (for whom we have callback data), we determine the low and high estimated GPA for students who were extended a callback offer. The survey includes the previous three-years of call back data. Limitations of the Callback Survey These compilations and correlations provide a very flawed snapshot of grade ranges associated with specific employers and their on-campus recruiting efforts at the University of Chicago. Two disclaimers should be noted at this point. All employers are not included on this list either because they did not provide the callback data or because they did not have a sufficient number of callbacks (four or more over a three year period) to allow us to aggregate their data in a way that protects student anonymity. The second disclaimer, the more important one, is that this survey in no way reflects the myriad of considerations that enter into a callback invitation decision. For the employer, some of the factors that affect that decision include hiring committee limits on the number of callbacks to be initiated at a given law school, the employer’s particular practice needs, the employer’s hiring goals for the summer or year in question or at the law school, past history of hiring at the law school, and the number of offers already out for callback appointments, to name just a few. For you the student, this survey does not reflect important factors that influence the probability that you will receive a callback such as interview skills, past work and educational experience, undergraduate institution or graduate degree, language or technical skills, geographical ties or limitations, coursework or practice interests, and a range of skills and activities (from writing, to team sports, to adventure travel, to marathon running, to gourmet cooking) that attract an interviewer’s interest and enthusiasm.

Using the Callback Survey Remember that employers are not permitted to pre-screen students and decide who gets accepted or rejected for an on-campus interview. Any grade patterns that you discern in the following survey report may serve as one consideration you use in selecting the employers for whom you bid; they are not criteria used by employers to select you for an on-campus interview.

Note that although the lowest grade average reported might indicate an employer’s grade threshold, it might not. We know of multiple incidences in which applicants with GPA estimates both below and above the survey’s range have been hired by a given firm.

Do not interpret the survey as empirical science. The survey is neither a composite of all participating employers nor a random sample of employers. The number of students reflected in the grade patterns may be as few as 4 or approaching 100. Some employers have data available for all three years while others have only one or two years of data provided. The data for one employer is not necessarily comparable to those for another employer.

Use the following survey in a larger context: The Fall OCI program is an extraordinary window of opportunity in which you can highlight your individual story and make your case during an interview for a callback. Researching employers, critically evaluating your interests and abilities, and honing your interviewing skills are of utmost importance and far more determinative of callback success than any numerical grade estimate.

Contact any of the counselors in OCS to discuss this and other information you might want to use in determining your bid strategy.
