30: By the time I started my freshman year at Harvard University, I had already slept with five guys. The social scene at college was snobby, so I tried to meet people from other schools. The Downside of Hook-Ups: Is Premarital Sex Hurting Young Women?

It's the latest quiz question for female co-eds across America: Are guys today more easily able to access no-strings-attached, premarital sex without committing to relationships or marriage? And how is it hurting us, the women they're hooking up with?

According to Mark Regnerus and Jeremy Uecker, researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, strides in gender equality have "created an imbalance that tips relationship power in the direction of the men."

Salon's Tracy Clark-Flory recently interviewed Regnerus about their new book, "Premarital Sex in America: How Young Americans Meet, Mate and Think About Marrying," which argues that it's caused by the recent gender gap in colleges. More women, the authors argue, have created less competition for the guys interested in landing them, even if it's just for a night. It's particularly harmful, they say, to the high-achieving women who are at those colleges and universities. Women, I suppose, like me -- and all those who attended elite institutions with me.

That's just one key part of their thesis I take issue with.

When I was an undergrad at Harvard, the academic and leadership capabilities of women were taken as a given. Women claimed the top positions of power in the student government and in the administration. Several female leaders sat at the helm of major student organizations. I even chaired a couple of women's interest clubs myself. My school was emblematic of a national trend in which girls were outperforming boys in schools and women had started outnumbering men in higher education.

The hook-up scene was readily available when I was in college, but it wasn't as if there weren't alternatives. In my experience, Harvard students came in three groups: 1) those who got into serious, long-term relationships, 2) those who had casual sex, and 3) those who had too many problems to pursue either (i.e., pre-meds).

Of course, I'm being a little simplistic. There were always those students who wanted option #1 or #2 but couldn't, despite their efforts, land either. (Sadly, Harvard doesn't mandate a course on social skills.) So, for those women who are looking for commitment but can't seem to find a mate, what does Regernus suggest? He encourages "the artificial restriction of sex until later in the relationship." But of course! Use sex as manipulation! Regernus argues this strategy makes sense since "men who have sex early in a relationship feel little impulse to make strong commitments," an assertion he doesn't back up with proof.

Personally, I know plenty of cases of first-date sex which later turned into full-blown relationships. (My own is just one example.) Men aren't all commitment-phobic and women aren't all ring-hungry, nor is a relationship necessarily a power struggle in which you plot to ensnare your partner's heart. If someone isn't interested in you, withholding sex is not going to magically make him interested in the idea of a relationship. (And if it does work, c*ckteasing probably isn't a good basis for a relationship either.)

Perhaps my biggest issue with the study is the underlying assumption that sex is nothing more than a commodity. Regernus says in the Salon interview that his book proves that the "price" of sex has gone down as a result of women's successes. He says that if there were a premium on sex, women would "never [have] sex with anyone until a man commits to marry her" which is "the most expensive thing you can charge."

Last I checked, the freedom to have sex without needing an engagement ring is one of the gains of feminism. Because women can hold their own today, they're not forced to make sexual decisions with the goal of marriage in mind. As Regernus points out, "It used to be women would shame each other for selling low." But isn't it a positive development that we no longer make women don a scarlet letter for having sex? The social stigma of promiscuity hurts women across the spectrum, from unwed mothers ostracized by their community to rape survivors whose words aren't trusted because of their sexual history.

Despite all the alarm, the romantic situation doesn't even look particularly dire for smart women. Regernus himself admits that "it's not that young, educated women don't marry -- in fact they have the highest odds of getting and staying married." He says that his concern is that women today feel like they must compete for male attention. But if straight women feel like there's a shortage of guys, it's more likely because people don't challenge cultural ideas about gender roles, which dictate that men ought to be breadwinners and patriarchs, while we gals sit in the passenger seat.

That's the sort of attitude that many of my female friends confronted when their peers stated preferences for girls who were "less intense" than we Harvard chicks. The same qualities our society admires in men (tenacity, ambition, intelligence) are considered immodest or aggressive in women. These beliefs are social constructs, not a result of human nature or biology. As the existence of matrilineal societies demonstrates, it's perfectly possible for romantic and sexual partnerships to exist in communities led by women. So, maybe we shouldn't be capitulating to these gendered rules but instead questioning why these sexist ideas still persist.

While women have come a long way, the struggle to overcome sexism is hardly over. But if we were able to obtain universal suffrage, then I have no doubt that that the modern gal can survive the dating marketplace, even if she refuses to put a price on sex.
