longline to board coach
biz class is nice...setas are similar to first class on an airplane
nice cafe/lounge area for meals/drinks
overall, a relaxing experience, although Union Station can be a hassle
Use the first class lounge if it's available to you

I'm a huge fan of Amtrak, and I'll always take Amtrak over flying if it's a journey of less than one day. Even if flying is faster, the amount of wasted time is far greater. The time you spend parking at the airport, going through security, boarding, putting away your laptop for takeoff, waiting for luggage, etc. is just lost time. When I ride Amtrak, I drive 20 minutes to the Amtrak station, park for free in front of the station, wait 10-15 minutes for my train to arrive, sit down, open up my laptop, and start working (or surfing the Internet if I don't feel like working). There is plenty of leg room and there is often free wifi (and I can tether with my phone if there isn't). I'd much rather take a 10-hour trip where I'm comfortable and can get work done than a 4-hour journey that's just wasted time. So I highly recommend Amtrak if it works for where you're traveling.

ive taken amtrak from nyc to sf, its a 180 experience.
the chicago to sf ride is fantastic. you go over the mississippi river, the ride over the rockies is beautifuland the scenery all the way through to california is mind blowing. the food on the train is surprisingly pretty good too. recommended.
