I am so glad xo came up as the number 1 search hit when I asked google this question. Anyone have any additional points of view on this question?

" market timing was least popular just as the market was about to decline. Just the reverse has tended to be the case during major market declines."

when the market is hot, talking heads suggest buy and hold (as opposed to trying to time the market) because they think the market is going to keep going up. that is a good signal that the market has reached its peak.

didn't post the link, but maybe: bogleheads is the temple of "buy and hold" rather than "time the market," and the proliferation of others shouting "buy and hold" maybe means now is the time to fade the public and "time the market" thinking it's peaked or will peak very soon, going against the bogleheads philosophy?

personally i think it's idiocy, and for 99% of retail investors you're better off investing as much as you can as early as you can in low cost ETFs at roughly 110-age in equities and not looking at your portfolio until you're 55 other than to rebalance

doesn't everyone there just say efficient market theory, buy index funds and be ultra safe, blah blah blah. seems like fairly sound advice.

That's basically it but the Bogleheads are known for pushing Vanguard index funds and staying away from financial advisor types who steer you into high fee mutual fund products, etc. there was a recent frontline documentary about the failures of many retirement accounts. frontline promoted the Bogle concepts

It is the best investment advice for anyone who doesn't do it for a living.

Just buy VTI and forget it. You'll beat 90% of your peers and spend a lot less time working on it.

to be fair, if u make any kind of decent income u should have quite a few individual stocks so u can sell for losses for tax purposes. that's my only problem with their advice.

Fair point. Some brokerages allow you to do sell specific lots, which would help you do this.

Otherwise, you can invest in different, but substantially similar, low fee index funds.

most of the low fee index funds require pretty substantial buy ins, but i suppose you could do it that way. it just seems easier to tinker with it for loss purposes the more investments you have that you can individually sell off.

I agree that they don't emphasize tax loss harvesting enough for individuals. Not sure this needs to be done with individual stocks, although I suppose that's one way to do it. But regardless, you should find a way to deduct $3K from ordinary income every year.

part of the problem is many people on there have no money outside their tax-advantaged accounts.

their "what to put in your tax advantaged accounts vs. your taxable accounts" chart is 180

I agree with the general premise. The cost of a mutual fund is an important factor in its long-term return. High cost funds do not outperform their cheaper counterparts over the long term.

Bogleheads suggests that you buy VTI, which is specifically referenced in that article as a good alternative.
