holy shit stanford's president addressed this in a CSPAN 3 interview.
INTERVIEWER: Do any type of graduates disappoint you, or disappoint the institution?
PRESIDENT HENNESSY: Well, in any large population, such as Stanford alumi, there will be cases where we look back, and we feel that a life went awry, certainly. We have, for instance... there are some graduates, whose names I know, who are currently incarcerated. Some for quite serious crimes. We have had... in some tragic cases, we lost our graduates to drug-related deaths, or to other misadventures.
These are lamentable cases. Short of prison, or death, there are some other outcomes that are hardly ideal. Long-term unemployment. Rare, but it has happened. An anomie takes hold; perhaps depression. Falling into public assistance. Midlaw, certainly.
INTERVIEWER: Midlaw?
PRESIDENT HENNESSY: Yes, it's... a bit of a midpoint, between these other two types of law, what they call "the biglaw" - these are the major firms - and "the shitlaw," which is your typical shyster in a cheap suit hustling for spare change by peddling questionable legal wares.
Now, the midlaw, what you have to recall... you see, with the shitlaw, the shitlaw has a looseness to it; the structure isn't all there, so we have breakout cases from the shitlaw, where a Stanford graduate will toil in the shitlaw for a time, then make a breakthrough, and this is possible in the shitlaw.
But the midlaw, well it's more secure. And that's why it's so deadly. Because you don't break out of the midlaw. It's just sort of your tomb. The midlaw is.

INTERVIEWER: Do you have any particular midlawyers in mind?
PRESIDENT HENNESSY: (Chuckles) Of course.
INTERVIEWER: Can you tell us about them?
PRESIDENT HENNESSY: Well I'm not here to be rude. I'm not here to... what you call, "name and shame" people. They know. They've known for a while, who they are.
INTERVIEWER: And you would feel comfortable referring to them as "midlaw 'bitches'"?
PRESIDENT HENNESSY: Well again, rudeness is not... it's not our goal, certainly at Stanford, but the term came about, not by me, but some time ago. Perhaps it's a reasonable descriptor in some cases, being mindful of its bluntness. It's not something I regularly... say... in a public venue.
