Women have ruined fiction

There is almost no truly masculine fiction being published. I loved reading growing up and have basically given up on fiction at this point. There is almost nothing of substance published that would appeal to a man.
As Saul Bellow once said, fiction is the higher autobiography and we lead such boring lives now. Look at the background of some of the great novelists of the past. Joseph Conrad was a merchant marine who traveled the world. James Salter flew fighter planes in combat missions in Korea. James Jones was in the infantry in the Pacific theater in WWII. John Le Carre was a spy. Hemingway was an ambulance driver in WW1. Dostoevsky was a prisoner. Albert Camus was in the resistance in Paris. Anyone with interesting experiences and perspectives is not writing fiction at this point.
Just another reason our culture is doomed. Perhaps the only art form capable of capturing the depth of human experience is being relegated to women talking about their feelings. It is sad really

When I settle in to read a magazine now, I read in order of stories I think I'll like best. And if I do decide to read one by a new-to-me author who appears to be a straight, white, cis male, it's usually because I trust the editor and the magazine. My reading sessions are filled with much less stress these days.

You could, like Lilit Marcus, read only books by women or, like Sunili Govinnage, read only books by people of color. Or you could choose a different axis to focus on: books by trans men and women, books by people from outside the U.S. or in translation, books by people with disabilities.
After a year of that, the next challenge would be to seek out books about or with characters that represent a marginalized identity or experience by any author. In addition to the identities listed above, I suggest: non-Christian religions or faiths, working class or poor, and asexual (as a start).

as to fiction, i have 2 ideas. the first is really an amalgam of different guys I grew up with in the south bronx circa 1991-1995 aka age of the super predator. and a lot of falls around a murder of a young guy who everyone is not exactly sure is dead or not. hard to explain, but it's semi-autobio (i ain't kill nobody) and is really a time piece to explain what shit was like during that time.
the second is a bit more a magical realism text with a catholic background about a couple where one person dies and his heaven is going to purgatory as a confessor. |
