Think I did it yesterday about 40 min into my sit

Freaky as hell but also quite pleasureable

Unable to do it today though :(

How long were you able to stay in it? How quick are you able to access it?

If I could access it quickly and stay in it for a long time I would have basically have a free, portable, untraceable, highly pleasurable and insightful drug on me at all times

This was literally a couple years back so I can barely recall. It only happened once though maybe three or four other times I felt like I was on the precipice but wasn't able to cross the threshold. It's one of those things where if you notice it and try to "enjoy" it it will slip out of your grasp. You need to be mentally and psychologically humble / not selfish or else you're SOL.

How long have u been doing it? Where did you learn? How often? There's a book I highly recommend but it may be a bit too advanced for you

Edit - I see you have plenty of experience

Go buy the illuminated mind. Absolutely fantastic amazing book.

Off and on since 2008? Consistently for the past 2.5 years though. I do a one hour sit after I get back from work (but way before I'm ready to go to bed so I'm not sleepy). Started with vipassana first by following the free book mindfulness in plain English. Have recently started to venture into more concentration stuff following Sheila Catherine's books

Have also started to incorporate walking mediation which is pretty sweet as well

Thanks for the info. Do you have any thoughts on guided meditation vs. non? I'm a new meditationmo and feel like this may actually stick so want to get it right.

Never really tried guided meditation. I know a friend who uses headspace and swears by it though. Try out different kinds and see what works for you - the most important thing is utility and taking what happens on the cushion into the real world (which I still struggle with)

Can you say more about the application into real world? I've been at it for five months or so and noticed I don't ruminate as much and def more present.

I had like 5 seconds of 1st jhana once. I was following a guide to attain it and it hit like a train when it finally happened, so I lost my nerve like immediately. it was 180 but I never went back to it since then.

I've been through the Jhanas, at least up to eight, to the extent that I can speedrun and skip.

Once you get the key to getting through them (focus on focus, attention on attention, find the hidden projector and perform a form ground shift so that reality collapses, basically) they unfold naturally with practice.

Bizzarely, I think you need a fairly high level of insight to get the trick. Thus jhana should be trained in conjuction with high speed noting practice and "shattering" practice - because you need shattering techniques to break out of each jhana.

My new focus is on zazen - just sitting, without creating karma - and walking meditation (makes nyc refreshing).

-this came after at least an hour a day practice for two years, using the book Mastering the Jhanas, as well as many more hours of insight practice, following the Daniel Ingram materials and the Pali Canon

Also, introducing self compassion mediation has essentially cured my anhedonia and listlessness.

There are three basic patterns to respond to stress - fight flight freeze, searching, and self-soothing. All are helpful and should be exercised, but imbalance is harmful.

Many kids today (and I was an extreme case) learn to "freeze" fight or flee in response to stress.

But there is an even more insidious pattern. Humans have a basic need to know and be known in a community of understanding. Many humans identify themselves as fundamentally bad, due to their needs not being met in childhood (lots of incidents of neglect, etc) and so the kernel of their personality is a fearsome void. They fill this void with information gathering - the idea being that they can build a composite self out of the stuff they can recite or prove.

These folks are prone to Internet addiction. Because they cannot relate to themselves and hence to others on the deepest level, they are in a constant state of mild to moderate stress, which they treat by compulsively information gathering, but then the info gathering becomes an addiction crowding out painful introspection or communication with others that might lead to the core trauma being addressed, and actual refreshment.

Self-compassion practice tackles this problem at the root - but it is hateful for people to hear, as they are addicts and identify the pile of shit they carry around as their "self." So instead they eventually have kids, and pass on the pattern, and justify to themselves that they are good parents because they "feel bad" about what they are not -

If you ask a scientist "what use is your knowledge, all the knowledge in the world," they look at you like you are crazy. Our society has succeeded precisely through dehumanizing its members - pouring human flesh through an addiction engine. It is ironic that we fault the commies - or perhaps not, since a pretense of individualism seems the best way to get a man to sacrifice himself on the altar of communal power.

In a quiet room, set a timer for fifteen minutes.

Sit in a comfortable but not too conformable posture, and breathe naturally.

Your task is to gently focus on your breath. Your mind will wander - when you notice your mind has wandered, gently note that your mind has wandered (say by thinking "TING") and gently return your focus to your breath.

Also let me emphasize that you should reward yourself mentally for noting your mind wandering. Perfection is impossible, and the ideal of instant perfection will only hold you back from progress.

And try to make your focus gentle, or soft. Over time you will develop different types of focus, but gentle focus is best to start with.

See the "recommended resources sidebar": https://www.reddit.com/r/streamentry/

I would start with part 1 of Daniel ingrams MCTB for an overview of "the path": https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5037f52d84ae1e87f694cfda/t/54a503cbe4b0d6033e3e210f/1420100555957/MCTB2_Part1_12-28-14.pdf

Then get the Mind Illuminated as a practical workbook
