Anyone brandishing a knife within that distance of another person is considered an imminent threat because of how quickly you can close that distance. Average person can cover 25 feet in around 2 seconds. Someone amped up on adrenaline and PCP can do it in less. If he doesn't comply, police are trained to use deadly force in those situations.
You can debate the merits of the training or that policy, but that's how cops are trained. |

In an ideal world, when encountered with a threat, it would be great if we could calmly and dispassionately assess the situation, run all of the variables, then select a course of action. In reality, you have maybe 1 or 2 seconds to figure out what the fuck is going on, then make a critical life or death decision. The cop correctly (IMO) identified that the suspect was a threat (brandishing weapon, failure to comply, acting menacingly) and met deadly force with deadly force.
My position, and I think anyone with any training in this field holds the same, is that if you still have a weapon in your hand, and you are still moving, you are still a threat. I do not feel the cop acted outside what authority the law gives him in this situation. I know you feel differently, but I guess it's just a disagreement at a fundamental level here.
