The sub owner is asking $599k. Lets assume I can get it at $500k and I can keep it at my dad's marina at Liberty Landing.
The sub has room for 50 tourists a trip but I'll need to use space for tables and prep areas, so let's assume I can do 30 people a trip. Each trip will be an hour and the food will be buffet style with drinks (mimosas and bloody mary's).
I'll charge $100 a person and can start at 9AM and run through 5 PM, so 8 trips a day for a total of 16 trips on the weekend.
Does this seem financially viable? I'll be doing the cooking and piloting with minimal staff.
EDIT: My math says we would gross $2.4 million a year. I guess it comes down to what are operational costs, labor costs and food costs. Seems like there is some $ to be made here. Maybe during the peak summer season we could operate during the week too. |

Perhaps more problematic is the assumption that you can keep a full house every day year round at $100/head. It's plausible that you would fill less than half yearly capacity . . . in fact that isn't even hyper-conservative. The tourist museums constructed from old aircraft carriers and battleships aren't exactly packed houses and you can get in for $10-$15. What makes you think a bunch of shrews will pay $100 to go on a dirty sub?
Perhaps there is money to be made but the revenue assumptions are not realistic. |

Also, typically the zoning districts for marinas have very limited permitted uses. So even if you paid off your marina to look the other way, a restaurant use wouldn't be permitted under the zoning code. You're going to need to buy or rent waterfront property where you can get approvals to dock your sub and operate a restaurant, and said places will not be cheap. You'll need fed approvals (coast guard) if the sub will be used in a navigable waterway.
You're competing against NYC river cruises that can hold far more people and more comfortably. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that said boats are far easier and cheaper to maintain than a sub. |
