Don't look at the absence of booze. Look at the many positive pursuits that can now fill your time and attention.

For me, I stopped reading and watching movies as my alcoholism progressed. In sobriety, I read a lot, I've studied foreign languages, and I train in jiu-jitsu. The point is that you have to pour yourself into healthy pursuits instead of simply telling yourself not to do something.

This was my goal too. Did heavy drinking and puke on 12/31. I cracked open my first beer on the golf course at 10:30am on January 1st. Drank bottle of wine with dinner last night. But maybe today is the day.

yes. About $3600 a year in dues, and then whatever I spend. Golf is extra, and I play on average once a month, but use the excellent practice facilities another 1-2 times a month.

yeah, totally reasonable. And that gets you access to an amazing downtown club for free (that I sadly never use).

Golf is about $100.

Only sucky thing is that I can only take one guest per month on the Ocean Course, and never on the Lake course (the US open course). Would have to become a golf member for that, and the wait list is like 15 years and another $50k.

Yeah weekdays are easy. It's hard to make it through full weekends let alone multiple weekends in a row though. There's always some dinner or someone wants to get a drink or just some big football game where a few beers would really hit the spot, etc.

Yeah. There's always something every month though. A month is a long time to go. I think maybe just making a goal not to do any 4+ drink sessions in a month would be a good goal.

Lol not for me. I easily can go a week or two without drinking but eventually I'll end up having 6-10 drinks in a day. Not doing it for a month would be an accomplishment for me at this point.

"I think I just need to avoid socializing for the month."

This. The 1-2 times I've abstained or largely abstained from drinking (like maybe 3-4 drinks a week, max) have been times when my social life has been negligible (like I'm stuck in a random city for a few weeks for work).

Doing this now. I manage to do it every 2 out of 3 years. Had a punishing hangover on Jan 1 so first two days were easy.

I actually find weekdays harder as I socialize after work or come home and just want a drink.

Weekends are easy, wife, kids, exercise, etc

Feb is a good month to go nodrink if you can swing it, except for Super Bowl and Valentines/President's Day Weekend. If you don't have a significant other and you don't care about football, this could be the credited month to stay inside and not socialize.

I am dead confident that people who do Dry January either just do a ton of drugs/live in weed legal states, or have zero social life.
