Rule of thumb is something like 80% of pre-retirement income. For us $500k+ xoxo posters that seems pretty absurd, honestly. I figure that maxing out 2 401ks for 35 years should cover me - depending on returns I think that gets you into a range of comfortable to balling out of control.

It depends on returns. In the calcs I did it's like $150-400k/year using the 4% rule. Of course there's another $60k in social security. Wife and I both have supplemental retirement plans too but I don't think they're necessary. If everything goes well we might be able to retire at 60 with 100% of our income but my point is that the downside scenario at $200k/year is also totally manageable.

In other words, I think it's enough to max out 401k and let do. You can't really predict what you'll need or what you'll have because there are too many variables.

So you think your retirement will generate 200k annually? That's like 3.8 million bucks on a 5% rate of return

I'm talking me and my wife together and saying $200k is worst case including $50k/yr in social security. That's under $2M each, which doesn't seem crazy at all.

your #s sound wildly optimistic unless you're also maxing out the employer's contribution max. are you using inflation-adjusted #s? what are your return assumptions?

whether or not you need 80% of pre-retirement income is a different question, but it's easier to meet the 80% requirement at retirement the more money you make

fixed expenses of life are a smaller percentage

luxury expenses can be a smaller percentage

emergency expenses are easer to mitigate

etc

70k in today's money.

I'm using the blue collar pension standard.

60-75% pension of a 100k cop's salary. This guys live well enough when retired.

you have it backwards: you should already have some rough idea or aspiration for a target real retirement income, then figure out what it takes to get there.
