They entered a phase at that point where a stray episode could be fantastic, but the average episode quality level started to decline, and it was at least partly a function of their writers trying to hard to do something weird all the time. That said, anyone who hates on either Grimes or Hank Scorpio is dumb and has a feeble brain that can't handle a change to a comfortable format. Both episodes have hilarious beats that I still remember frequently and bring up with my simpsonsmo buddies all the time. If you ding everything post season 5 you aren't a real fan of the show.
