I just see it as similar to people who are members of a running group/team or private club like the University Club or whatever. It's a sense of esprit-de-corps and a chance to meet new people after college, when a lot of people feel lost if they move to a new city.
I think a regular churchgoer who is somewhat active in his or her church community is much more likely to be mentally healthy than someone who defines himself or herself primarily on career and their relationship with their SO/spouse/kids. |

When I was in high school, a classmate played the drums in the 'praise band'. He was loud as fuck, seemingly totally incapable of playing at anything less than full rock-band intensity. It was absolutely awful. They even installed a plexiglass divider in front of his drum kit to try to tone it down a bit but that didn't do anything. |
