A square mile is 640 acres. If you were to divide it into 1/4ths and walk the perimeter of one of these sections how far have you traveled in miles

one quarter of perimeter not same as perimeter of a quarter section. one quarter of the full perimeter is just one side, 1 mile..ok. but it goes inside too, you know. it curls in. so thats twice, nigga! 2 miles. im sure there is some kind of grand theory one can make out of this bs relationship.

1/2 mile

Each side of a square mile is 1/4 mile. A square has 4 sides, so 1 square mile = 1/4 mile per side. A quarter section of that square mile has 1/8 mile sides. 4 * 1/8 = 1/2

start with a square of area 1 sq mile, linear length of a side is 1 mile.

divide the square into 4 equal smaller squares, so each smaller square has 0.25 sq mile area and side length 0.5 mi. the perimeter of a little square is four times the side length, so 2 miles

sure thing, faggot.

a square mile is 640 acres, so a quarter section is 160 acres. 640/4=160. A square mile is a mile on each side. You can confirm this by multiplying a mile in feet (5280) by a mile in feet (5280) and dividing by the number of square feet per acre (43560). 5280*5280/43560 = 640.

To split the full square mile section into quarter sections you have to split each side into half miles.

if you walk four half miles (because there are four sides to a square) you have walked two miles. 0.5*4=2.

You can double check this by multiplying a half mile in feet (2640) by a half mile in feet (2640) and dividing by the number of feet per acre (43560) 2640*2640/43560 = 160ac.

OP does not specify that, it asks for a quarter of some area that is one square mile, meaning all you can say about the quarter is that it is a .25 sq mi

if you take a square that is 1 sq mi and divide it into four equal squares, then you will have walked 2 mi, but if you have two .5 sq mi squares that touch on a corner, that is 1 sq mi area

divide each of those squares diagonally in half and you have four .25 sq mi areas, but the perimeter of each one is 2^(1/4) + sqrt(2) mi, which is approx 2.6 mi

so like i said, op question is unanswerable without additional info, and i recall there being LR and games questions where (E) needs more information was a choice

that is a 1 sq mi area of two 1/2 sq miles, then you divide into fourths

of course i did some algebra wrong when calculating the actual perimeter of one of those quarters because LJL at a math major working with actual #s

furthermore if you were to take a perfectly square 1 sq mi area and divide it into equal quarters by diagonally connecting the vertices of the square mile, you'd have four quarters, each with a perimeter of 1 + 1 + sqrt(2) = 2 + sqrt(2) = approx 2.7

those three configurations are all 1 sq mi divided into equal quarters, but none of the 1/4 sq mi divisions have the same perimeter - the first is 2 mi, the second i'm too lazy to calculate and did it wrong above, and the third is 2.7-ish

there are also likely some goofy divisions you could come up with that look like long, skinny worms that wrap around each other, and you'd get some interesting perimeters that way

actually, you get a perimeter less than 2 by making the original area a circle. 1 sq mi circle has a radius of .56 miles; 1/4 of that gives you a circle of radius .28, which is a circumference of 1.76 miles.

The most standard shape for an acre is one furlong by one chain. edit, so 640 acres / 4 = aproximately 150.

so 150 x 1/4 of a furlong = about 20 furlongs, or about 1 mile.

Some epic dimwittedness here.

If you divide it into 4 squares, each has a perimeter of 2 miles.

But you can also divide it into 4 rectangles, each with a length of 1 mile and a width of 0.25 miles, in which case the perimeter of one is 2.5 miles.

The question is poorly formulated

2 miles, assuming the cuts are down the middle lengthwise and crosswise. You can ignore the acres part entirely.

how is anyone still answering this with anything but "impossible to answer w/o more specifications"

how you draw the borders affects the perimeter

hell, the OP doesn't even specify that the 640 acres is a perfect square to begin with

at higher elevations shapes start to matter
