the story isn't that bad at first. the problem, like with any AI movie, is that it's impossible for reasonably intelligent people to empathize with AI characters. it doesn't help that Darryl Hannah is an awful actor and ugly, and takes over the movie at the midway point. that being said, if you see the early 80s HBO/showtime version (with Harrison Ford narration, and no gore removed like the theatrical version), and you appreciate Raymond Chandler detective stories and noir in general, it's a good enough story to support the amazing cinematography and sfx

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

and the original script speech lmao:

I have known adventures, seen places you people will never see, I've been Offworld and back...frontiers! I've stood on the back deck of a blinker bound for the Plutition Camps with sweat in my eyes watching the stars fight on the shoulder of Orion. I've felt wind in my hair, riding test boats off the black galaxies and seen an attack fleet burn like a match and disappear. I've seen it...felt it!

that speech is fucking awesome... what are you talking about?

First, it reinforces the central theme that the replicants are more human than those who are trying to exterminate them (because it's clear that he sees wonder in the world).

Second, he's describing something that sounds visually incredible yet it's off-screen so you have to imagine it. Basically the movie has restraint. This is something most modern "sci-fi" shit movies completely lack.

its different. but kinda similar. that was the whole idea, i guess. make something similar, but have a different feel to it. the violence is still very important to the film. outbursts of violence still as powerful as the first one, but i think the first one is better in every respect anyways. but visually, the second one does some things are are even more jaw dropping, and they had to deliver on that because the first one was jaw dropping visually. first one is still better though, the scene where dekart chases the snake stripper through eh streets and then shoots her through the glass is better violent scene than any scene in the new blade runner, so in that way they made an inferior movie. none of the death scenes come close to that one, or the guy with the bird in his hand, or the death of tyrell. somehow all those felt more sad and sombre than any of the ones in the new one, however the new one had some interesting elements to it that im glad it was made, it was 180 in its own right.

It's a visionary piece of filmmaking but LOL at Ridley Scott's whiskey-afflicted inability to create dramatic tension or investment in the people on the screen. They somehow hit on a remarkable formula, one so good that it overcomes the horrendous script and acting, but it really feels like an accident that it is succeeds in the manner it does.

The design, cinematography, and the way they so vividly portrayed this rich, captivating world that felt startling and unique makes it an arguable creative masterpiece. There are few films that rival it in that respect. It was profoundly influential on all kinds of artist working in visual media and pop culture and genre fiction more broadly. Visual and filmmaking ideas from that movie are still heavily trafficked.

Avant garde is a stretch. I like Ridley Scott but he's emotionally tone-deaf to the point of likely spectrum diagnosis and he's borderline incoherent as a narrative filmmaker due to his devotion to brilliant visual experiences at the expense of most else.

The casting is terrible. Aside from Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer everyone else is shitty, wooden, or just weird and out of place. That toy maker looks like a prole goober. Edward James Olmos is supposed to be Asian or something. Darryl Hannah is always the shittiest actor in every movie she does. Sean Young is ok but totally forgettable.

The technology is so gay. CRT screens everywhere, cars look like old Chryslers with ridiculous fenders bolted onto them, there's no wireless communication between devices, and people still smoke in office buildings.
